  • Drop Dead Healthy: One Man's Humble Quest for Bodily Perfection

    A. J. Jacobs tackles his most challenging experiment yet: a yearlong mission to radically improve every element of his body and mind - from his brain to his fingertips to his abs. First, he had to tackle a complicated web of diet and exercise advice, most which is nonsensical, unproven, and contradictory. Second, he had to consult a team of medical advisers. And finally, he had to subject himself, over the course of two years, to a grueling regimen of exercises and a range of diets and nutritional plans.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This is a "tell-a-friend" worthy listen. Informative, entertaining and quirky. Whats not to like?

What other book might you compare Drop Dead Healthy to and why?

Jacobs has several of these "reality memoir" type books. The first two, Know It All and Living Biblically, are great reads. Guinea Pig Diaries was not so engaging in audio format and the writer's performance left much to be desired. With Healthiest Man, AJ is back in form displaying his signature blend of charming personal anecdote and fascinatingly obscure factual details to the listener's delight.

    Which scene was your favorite?

AJ's forays into the lesser known, more exotic forms of fringe exercise regiments will surely put a smile on your face.

The unworldly, innocent Ana is startled to realize she wants this man and, despite his enigmatic reserve, finds she is desperate to get close to him. Unable to resist Ana’s quiet beauty, wit, and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her, too—but on his own terms.

What disappointed you about Fifty Shades of Grey?

    Juvenile. Boring. Unbelievable. Poorly written.

Would you ever listen to anything by E L James again?

    No, thank you.

How could the performance have been better?

With a different performer. The quality of the reader's performance was on par with the quality of the author's writing, ghastly.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

It has a nice cover design?

What disappointed you about Love Your Body?

It is dated. Affirmations have value, but "I love my rectum"? Come on. Some passages are useful, but others have me just smiling and shaking my head, asking "Really?"

How could the performance have been better?

The sound quality is poor and this is clearly an old performance.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Bemusement, more like. I listened all the way through, took what I could and just kind of enjoyed the nostalgic feel of the recording as visions of a certain SNL characters floated through my mind.

    Any additional comments?

Self-help is one of my favorite genres, because I need a lot of help . . . this title just isn't helpful. Look elsewhere.

If you could sum up Duma Key in three words, what would they be?

    Intriguing, engaging, hair-raising . . . for real!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Duma Key?

The use of painting as a way to heal, and not theraputically . . . actually painting the sight back into a man.

Which character – as performed by John Slattery – was your favorite?

The friend . . . you can take my inability to remember the character;s name as a sign of the story's overwhelming strength or my approaching a certain age, either way, Slattery's performance of the sincere man waiting on the beach with a pitcher of iced green tea who peppers his language with Spanish expressions makes the character all the more endearing.
