I saw its movie coming out and thought I would enjoy the audiobook first. I greatly enjoyed the pace of the book and the personalities shown forth. There were a few times that his descriptions were a little vague as I tried to imagine the scene in my head and found a few details lacking, but overall I would consider that a minor problem. I then saw the movie. Even though they certainly got the main events of the book right, the "feel" of it didn't quite compare. To those that saw the movie and are on the fence, I would urge you to enjoy the audiobook and enjoy greater character development and a superior unfolding of the storyline. Give it one more chance.
As with most casual music listeners such as myself, I would imagine there are worlds of history behind the music that we simply haven't got a glimmer. I'm a fan of the Beach Boys but knew hardly anything about them. It's deeply heartening to learn more of the people behind the music that is so much a part of the American experience of my generation. And not only that, but the narration was superb.
I have no desire to be harsh, but I was very disappointed with this book. I will set aside the fact that I don't subscribe to most of the metaphysical ideas promoted in the book and will speak to its less than stellar choppy writing style and its even more poorly handled narration. This is the only purchase in which I even had a momentary consideration of asking for my credit back.
I completely enjoyed this audiobook. Its lessons on improving one's personal finances are well founded and time tested, yet not delivered in a dry sleep-inducing manner. I greatly enjoy self development books but often find them to be a little boring to sit through. I was finished with this one before i knew it, grabbed my device and started it again!
I greatly enjoyed the interweaving of historical tales of Ireland with a young boy's pursuit of his passion. Some other reviews speak of this book as being slow, and I suppose it is to a degree. It wasn't meant to be an adrenaline rush from cover to cover. I would, however, highly recommend this to anyone who likes to feel the magic of a master storyteller fill your mind and soul.
