While i initially thought that the characters were too smart to get drawn into the particular plot that was laid out, I really enjoyed the ride anyway. The narrator was excellent for the Bosch character and the twists and turns were a lot of fun. I turned 4 other people on to the book already and none have been disappointed.
If you like police mysteries a la Lincoln and Childs' Pendergast series, then consider this as a British cousin. It was fast paced and had some humor in it which I really love, plus the story had some supernatural plot twists that change the rules of "normal" life just enough to make things fun.
There were several branches to the plot and relationships that made the whole thing into a nice whole story. It didn't always go where I anticipated, but isn't that the fun of it? I hate books that are too predictable, why bother reading them. The author also peppered in enough London geography that I could look things up on a map and with Google to see where the characters were and get a sense of place which I like to do. I am REALLY intrigued by Molly and hope to learn more about her in future installments.
Kobna Holdbrook-Smith was an EXCELLENT narrator. He is my favorite type. He had enough regional accents in his arsenal to be able to follow each character without trouble. He also clearly distinguished between male and female characters without sounding silly and falsetto. I would be inclined to try a book by a new author if he was the narrator.
I found myself listening to this book every chance I got until it was gone. I was so happy with the ending, but disappointed it was over.
I have already downloaded part 2 of the series and will start it after work today.
A Roller-coaster Ride!
Joe Ledger is a sensitive, yet snarky character that can really kick some butt when necessary!
There are too many fave scenes to count! The book was non-stop action!
Mister Church as the enigmatic leader of the good guys is iconic.
Ray Porter is an exceptional narrator. He is a master of voices and timing. I will be looking for more from Maberry and Porter.
I thought that the narrator/author was excellent. I also really liked the mnemonics that help you to understand when you are complaining so that you can try and stop it. My concern was that there was little treatment of how to redress issues in life without complaining past the first chapter. After that there were mostly anecdotes illustrating how Mr. Boen lives complaint free. I tend to be a learner by example, but more concrete strategies would have been helpful to me.
Will Bowen was a very clear speaker and his passion for his subject really came through in his writing.
I did enjoy the book and I did learn from it. I plan to listen to it more than once to try and get to make a complaint-free life a habit that I can be proud of.
I really like books with a lot of narrative and description, but there were times that I got lost in the minutia with this book. By the end, I really liked it and I am glad I read it, but I need a break before moving to part 2 of the trilogy. The characters are very likeable and easy to sympathize with and I could easily picture the venues and feel the cold of a Swedish winter as I listened. The narrator is superb and I will be seeking out more of his work as well.
I really liked the Harry Potter series and tried Twilight as its replacement. I did not like that series. It was too sappy for me and I did not make it past the first book. This book was a little older than Potter, but more innocent than Twilight. Sometimes the descriptions were too wordy, but overall the story was good and I will look forward to trying the next one to see what happens to Ren and his brother :-)
Just when you think he's doomed, Pendergast surprises you! I love the writings of each of these authors on their own, but together they are a POWERHOUSE. When is the next one coming out?? I can't wait!
I got turned on to the Bosch novels by Echo Park. I listened to this one next as the earliest in the series that I could find. I was thoroughly pleased with my first purchase and I even found myself liking Burt Reynolds narration.
