  • Hebrew Phase 1, Unit 01-05: Learn to Speak and Understand Hebrew with Pimsleur Language Programs

    • ORIGINAL (2 hrs and 46 mins)
    • By Pimsleur

Each lesson in Hebrew Phase 1, Units 1-5 provides 30 minutes of spoken language practice, with an introductory conversation, and new vocabulary and structures. Detailed instructions enable you to understand and participate in the conversation. Each lesson contains practice for vocabulary introduced in previous lessons.

Elaine Bridges says: "A good program for conversation"
"Ok with another book for reading skills"

I went through the whole Pimsleur Hebrew (1, 2 and 3) and I it is a very efficient method to unlock speaking difficulties as well as oral understanding.
However the course does not provide with sufficient grammar explanations (especially with regard to the verbs), and the reading material is too poor.
I highly recommend to start by an alef-bet and then go on with pimsleur + a book for reading skills (Ora Band or Ester Raizen are excellent to get familiar with the reading in hebrew).

  • The Modern Scholar: The History of Ancient Israel: From the Patriarchs Through the Romans

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 41 mins)
    • By Eric H. Cline

Israel conjures up myriad associations for peoples of all cultures and religious backgrounds. Inextricably associated with the world's three most prominent religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam), Israel is steeped in history and conflict, much of which is known through the tales of biblical figures such as Moses, David, Solomon, and, of course, Jesus Christ. But how much of the Bible can be relied upon as accurate history? And how much of the biblical record can be verified through archaeology?

Chris says: "Religious Beliefs and History to Intertwine as One"
"A very good piece of work!"
What did you love best about The Modern Scholar?

An excellent introduction to a very complex and long history. We learn the state of the latest diggings and archeological hypothesis and at the same time, we always keep in mind the biblical framework.

Ancient Israel is a fascinating civilization, with fascinating and incredibly influential history, which is rather extraordinary given the small size of the state and the very short lenght of its political autonomy (compared with Egypt or Rome).

  • America: Empire Of Liberty, Volume 2: Power and Progress

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 53 mins)
    • By David Reynolds
    • Narrated By David Reynolds

Volume Two of David Reynolds's major BBC Radio 4 series traces America's story from the Civil War to World War Two. This epic narrative tells the saga of the United States through the voices of those who lived it - presidents and farmers, mothers and children, settlers and soldiers, immigrants and Native Americans. This is also the story of how ordinary Americans lived, worked and had fun - with fascinating snapshots of H.J. Heinz, Buffalo Bill, skyscrapers, baseball, the Flappers and Gone with the Wind.

BIED says: "lively history and convictions"
    "lively history and convictions"

The author (David Reynolds) proposes a history of US exclusively oriented on the freedom theme. Each episode focuses on one aspect of a particular period (he does not pretend to be exhaustive), in the form of an audio documentary built with various authentics sources (such as speeches, letters, etc., read by professional actors or recorded on the radio or TV). David Reynolds clearly is a supporter of the American ideal and the whole series (volumes 1 to 3) shows a progression from freedom for some towards freedom for all. Some might not agree with his thesis, still the audiobook is wonderfully executed.

  • This Mighty Scourge: Perspectives on the Civil War

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 47 mins)
    • By James M. McPherson
    • Narrated By Barrett Whitener
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

The Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Battle Cry of Freedom and many other award-winning books, James M. McPherson is America's preeminent Civil War historian. Now, in this collection of provocative and illuminating essays, McPherson offers fresh insight into many of the most enduring questions about one of the defining moments in our nation's history.

Roy says: "An Introduction to McPherson"
    "Excellent collection of essays"

Do not expect to read a comprehensive study of the Civil War. This is a collection of essays covering various topics, such as an excellent bio of Jesse James, or the way post-war Southern lobbies managed to change the contents of history textbooks dealing with the Civil War and deterred scholars from making independent search on this topic in Southern colleges.
