Archie's life has disintegrated. Fresh from a dead marriage, middle-aged Archie stretches out a vacuum hose, seals up his car and prepares to die. But unbeknownst to him, his darkest hour is also his luckiest day. With the opening of a butcher's shop, his life is saved and soon he is on his way to beginning a new life with a young Jamaican woman looking for the last man on earth.

    Susan says: "Superb narration"
    "White Teeth gets boring!"
    Overall

I thought I'd really like this book. I enjoyed it initially, but then it started to drag and I've now lost interest entirely. I made it through about 4 hrs. and am giving up.

Isabella d'Este, daughter of the Duke of Ferrara, born into privilege and the political and artistic turbulence of Renaissance Italy, is a stunning black-eyed blonde and a precocious lover and collector of art. Worldly and ambitious, she has never envied her less attractive sister, the spirited but naive Beatrice, until, by a quirk of fate, Beatrice is betrothed to the future Duke of Milan.

Michael Allen says: "Good, but not Captivating"
    "Leonardo's Swans"
    Overall

I couldn't force myself to read more than about one-fourth of this book. In the author's effort to sound authentically renaissance, it's stilted and artificial sounding. Boring, too!

The Grey sisters had only each other when their mother died years ago. Their father provided for them physically on Water's Edge, the ranch that had been in their family for three generations, each of them however, longed for their father's love.

Brenda says: "Well written, POORLY narrated... :("
    "Poor narration and trite plot"
    Overall

I couldn't make it very far in this book...the narrator's voice drove me crazy, especially when in the voice of Winona. I also found the characters and plot very predictable and stereotypical. I've read this author in the past but won't do so again, and will definitely avoid the narrator!

Why we think it’s a great listen: The best book club you’ve never heard of – but will be eager to join, courtesy of a full cast of true characters. January 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she's never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb....

Kent says: "MUCH better than I ever expected! Give it a try!"
    "A wonderful, delightful surprise."
    Overall

I chose this book because I liked the title (!) and it was a gem. The character development was very good and I thoroughly enjoyed the book.
