One of Jane Austen's most complex and mature works, Mansfield Park shows the writer at the top of her form, tackling the manners and customs of early 19th-century society with wit and irony that still resonate with readers two centuries after the book's initial publication. Flo Gibson's compelling narration gives perfect voice to the trials and tribulations of Fanny Price, sent at a young age to live with her rich relations.

I think Flo Gibson does a good job at narrating this book (and I don't know her personally or anything, I swear). I only give it three stars because I think the story itself is not one of Austin's best.

  • Double Knot: Davis Way Crime Caper, Book 5

Superspy Davis Way sets sail on a Caribbean cruise aboard the MS Probability with 50 billionaires, a boatload of Louis Vuitton luggage, Anderson Cooper, and her mother. (Her mother?) The weather is perfect, the seas are calm, and suite 704 is spectacular. Until the door slams shut. For good. Obviously it's a system glitch. Surely someone will show up to free Davis, Miss Hawaii, and the creepy staff. But when the minutes turn to hours and the hours stretch into a day, Davis knows it's up to her.

really like that Davis grows and progresses with her life throughout the series. very funny as well. I also loved that she is such a good hacker and the plots are always interesting. I think this has been the best book of the series yet.

the narrator was good her women sounded great and the comic tu.ing was spot-on. however, many of the men sounded like they weren't very smart. sure Baylor is supposed to be not that smart but he's not anywhere near s dumb as Benson made him sound. and Davis' father is smart but her portrayal of him made him sound unintelligent as well. All that said, Benson is very talented.

so many narrators seem to think they have to go out of their way to have a distinct voice for each character. I don't think that's necessary, especially if it leads to voices that don't really fit the character. the books are written to be read, so the text distinguishes the characters. when voices are overdone it becomes distracting. this is not just something Benson does many of the narrators I've listened to do the same.

  • T Is for Trespass: A Kinsey Millhone Mystery

In what may be her most unsettling novel to date, Sue Grafton's T Is for Trespass is also her most direct confrontation with the forces of evil. Beginning slowly with the day-to-day life of a private eye, Grafton suddenly shifts from the voice of Kinsey Millhone to that of Solana Rojas, introducing listeners to a chilling sociopath. Rojas is not her birth name. It is an identity she cunningly stole, an identity that gives her access to private caregiving jobs.

"Please Get This Title With Another Narrator!"
    Overall

I agree that Walter Zimmerman is the worst narrator I've ever heard. Before joining audible, I've mistakenly checked out countless books on tape from the library narrated by him and I couldn't stand to listen to a single one of those books. It's as though Zimmerman is reading by rote and has no idea what he's saying. I very much want to listen to War and Peace, so to the kind people at audible: Please, please, please try to find a version read by a different narrator. And to other members, I strongly encourage you to avoid of books narrated by Mr. Zimmerman.
