"Wonderful listen"
I bought this book based on its strong reviews and was not disappointed. I could hardly wait to go for a daily run, just to hear more of the story. This is the first John Irving book I've read but won't be my last.
The narration is excellent, a little slow paced, but easy to listen to.
I highly recommend this book.
"Interesting Plot, Kept me to the end"
I've been a Stephen King fan for a long time but some of his more graphic novels had me wondering if I would enjoy hearing his work. This is not a blood and gore story, it is more mystery and sci-fi.
The story revolves around a man who goes back in time to prevent the death of JFK. The concept itself was fascinating to me. What would it be like? King does a great job illustrating the differences, in dress, in slang, in expectations, between our modern world and the late 50s and 60s. He captures the small things I would not have thought about but truly make the story feel real.
I really liked hearing the echos of his other works in this novel. We visit places and people in his other books which weaves a more complex story.
Give this one a try. The narration is excellent, pace is good and the story is captivating.
"Quick, fun update on DD Warren"
My only complaint is that the story is so short! I really enjoyed this D.D. Warren story. It's lighter than her normal but quite a fun diversion. I won't lie - I can't wait for the next full length story!
D.D. is on a film set, 7 months pregnant and you just know someone's going to turn up dead. The imagery was so good I felt like I could really see what was described.
If you want a quick story, don't miss this one!
"Wonderful story, excellent narrator"
This is my second John Irving book and I loved it. A Prayer for Owen Meany worked its way into my heart and I wished the book would continue forever. Joe Barrett's narration made the story come alive for me, giving Owen a depth of character I'm sure I would have missed in print.
This is a story of two best friends, one who believes he's been sent by God to do something important. There is some wonderful theology and critisim of organized religion sprinkled throughout, but not to the point of turning off a non-Christian reader. I did find myself questioning some long held beliefs because of Irving's characters.
This book is easy to listen to, easy to pick up after an absence and enjoy again. It will make you laugh, cry and think. In the end, it might even make you take a second look at your own life and I suspect that was Owen's gift after all.
"Thrilling with lots of twists and turns"
This is a great book with lots of twists to the story. It kept me up late listening and wondering what would happen next. Characters are well developed and interesting. The narrator does an amazing job with each, you can always "hear" who is talking.
The imagery in this book is so good that you can practically see the pictures in your mind as you listen and feel the changing temperature, mood and light.
I can't recommend this book highly enough. I bought it based on other listeners' reviews and was not disappointed.
"Interesting & rings true"
I enjoyed this book, which I got as a freebie. It provided an interesting overview of how entrepreneurs think, act and work. It confirmed my own experience of how differently one must think when they no longer work for a boss.
If you are considering entrepreneurship, I would recommend this book. The author lays out many discussion points, places to spark your thinking and ends suggesting you pay more for a Millionaire course.
I have not read any more of the series but I thought this was an excellent starting point for those beginning in business ownership. As a free book, it was actually pretty good.
"A Rich Documentary without images"
Truly, the only downside to this book is the lack of images. I found myself sitting in front of Google Images as I listened, just to make sure I understood what the author was talking about.
This is a book that listens like a documentary on television. Brilliantly narrated, with some parts voiced by others, giving you a "History Channel" type of experience. I felt moved in so many places and was amazed at the rich history of this cemetery.
Americans should be proud of this place and Robert Poole has honoured veterans and their families with his beautiful work. I know I will be making a visit to the cemetery, just because of the passion of this book.
If you know a solider, you owe it to them to listen to this story.
"The Hype is True"
I had this book in my library for months before I finally listened to it. I wish I hadn't waited! I was completely involved with the story within the first five minutes. The narration is excellent and I really enjoyed the two voices of Jacob.
If you are looking for a truly good listen, a great love story that has depth and drama and is one of the most talked about books in my office, try Water for Elephants.
"Sweeping Story, Incredible Narration"
This is easily in my top 10 of favorite audio books. The narrator, Ken Follett takes this from a long, long listen into a world you'll wish never ends. Even after 40 hours of listening, I wanted to hear more.
This is a story of cathedral building but it is so much more than that. Romance, betrayal, battle scenes (without too much gore), religion and soul searching all play out in richly detailed plot. I found myself cheering on Tom Builder, weeping for Aliena and praying for Prior Philip.
This is the book that readers tell each other about, instead of publishers making a splashy suggestion. This is a book you'll find yourself recommending over and over.
