Hailed by Salman Rushdie as a "brilliantly innovative thriller-writer", Philip Kerr is the creator of taut, gripping, noir-tinged mysteries set in Nazi-era Berlin that are nothing short of spellbinding. The first book of the Berlin Noir trilogy, March Violets introduces listeners to Bernie Gunther, an ex-policeman who thought he'd seen everything on the streets of 1930s Berlin - until he turned freelance and each case he tackled sucked him further into the grisly excesses of Nazi subculture.

Where does March Violets rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Excellent writing with great delivery. I can't want until next month to get the third edition. You will not be disappointed.

What was one of the most memorable moments of March Violets?

    Historical Fiction at it's finest.

Have you listened to any of John Lee’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but I will be if he keeps on delivering this quality of work

Berlin, March, 1943. A month has passed since the stunning defeat at Stalingrad. Though Hitler insists Germany is winning the war, commanders on the ground know better. Morale is low, discipline at risk. Now word has reached Berlin of a Red massacre of Polish officers in the Katyn Forest near Smolensk. If true, the message it would send to the troops is clear: Fight on or risk certain death.

    The series is the best.

What about Paul Hecht’s performance did you like?

I liked the first performer better, but once you get used to him, it is OK. I love Bernie Gunther, what a hero.

Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead, serving in the household of the enigmatic Commander and his bitter wife. She may go out once a day to markets whose signs are now pictures because women are not allowed to read. She must pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, for in a time of declining birthrates her value lies in her fertility, and failure means exile to the dangerously polluted Colonies. Offred can remember a time when she lived with her husband and daughter and had a job, before she lost even her own name....

What did you love best about The Handmaid's Tale?

I tried to read this book several times and when I saw Clair Danes was reading it, I downloaded it. She should do more books, I love her voice. It is like listening to a song. My hats off to Margaret Atwood, a great writer, that I have read so often. Brilliant plot and story. I loved "The Blind Assassin" and wish she would have stuck with this style instead of Science Fiction. Anyway, she still is great and I admire her very much.

Audible should get Danes to do more reading, she is the best women reader that I have listened to. What a performance!

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Claire Danes

Have you listened to any of Claire Danes’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but if she does anymore books, I certainly will.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It was sad, but could happen. We don't know what the future holds. I still like "The Blind Assassin" more. This happens in peoples lives all the time and was a deep and thoughtful story.

In 1894 Carrie McGavock is an old woman who has only her former slave to keep her company...and the almost 1,500 soldiers buried in her backyard. Years before, rather than let someone plow over the field where these young men had been buried, Carrie dug them up and reburied them in her own personal cemetery. Now, as she walks the rows of the dead, an old soldier appears. It is the man she met on the day of the battle that changed everything.

The best book that I have heard from Audible and have been a member for years. Great narration. Wish there were more like this. It is like a play.
