Incredible adventure that expertly connects decades old and more recent historical events. Character development was excellent as it gave you insight into the various emotions driving the expedition. Detail was just right without getting too much into the technical aspects of diving. Highly recommend even if you are not interested in the world of diving.
Bowden does a nice job of providing backgrounds for this interesting cast of owners, coaches and players. When I realized what an amazing group of people were involved in this game, on both sides, I understand why it was a pivotal event in sports history. The game play narration and timeline were well done. I have more respect for the teams talent and coaching after listening to this book.
Michael Lewis captures the exceptional experience countless athletes and students have had with coaches and teachers over the years. He relates his good fortune in having a coach who helped him realize he had something to contribute and emphasized the importance of hard work.
Lewis has an uncanny ability to clearly explain many aspects of life and this book is right on target. My entire family listened to the book and we all enjoyed the message.
The book really brings the story to life and the narrator does a wonderful job of conveying the author's point of view. Difficult to stop listening because of the suspenseful twists and turns of this Seal's experiences. Gives you a greater appreciation for the courage and sacrifices of our military personnel. Also, the author writes extensively about brave Afghans willing to fight against the Taliban and Al Qaeda. I highly recommend Lone Survivor.
Buckley tells a story that has humor but also deals with serious topics in the Middle East. Florence is an interesting and inspiring character with great courage and integrity. Also, there are many different twists and turns in the plot which make the book riveting throughout.
Boomsday has excellent character development and many funny moments. At 10 hours it is a long book, but just when you think it can not make you laugh anymore, the book has new twists and turns. If anyone can find humor in the Social Security funding crisis, it is Christopher Buckley! Be sure to check your ego at the door because he skewers a wide range of characters.
Ms. Noonan does a wonderful job reviewing John Paul's extraordinary lifetime and adds her personal religious experiences and meetings with the Pope into the story. Having her narrate really brings the book to life, and I found "John Paul the Great" both enjoyable and interesting.
This is an incredible story of courage and seamanship. It is even more amazing knowing the sailors were trying to avoid two foes (the Japanese and a major typhoon) at the same time with little available information. The authors expertly blend in the science of meteorology with the real life challenges of trying to keep these ships afloat and the struggle to survive in the open ocean. I highly recommend this book.
