A spy plane gathering data on a new Russian weapon is blown out of the sky by a mysterious MiG. Is it an accident or the start of the next world war? One U.S. agency has what it takes to find out - the National Security Agency and its covert operations team: DEEP BLACK.

What disappointed you about Deep Black?

There are so many sub-plots that never get tied together or wrap up that the entire book left me wondering what was the point. What happened to 'Wave 3?' What was the point of the defection of the pilot? (That entire plot line seemed worthless). Was this book about 'lasers' or the assassination? What dies any of it really have to do with Deep Black? This book was a mess of topics that never tied together.

Has Deep Black turned you off from other books in this genre?

No. But I will give the series another chance. Perhaps this (book 1) leaves alot open for the next one.

What didn’t you like about J. Charles’s performance?

First, pick a dialect for the character and stick with it. One minute a character sounds like he is from Brooklyn and the next, a surfer from California. The Russian accent, while completely incorrect, would have been ok if in the middle of the sentence it didn't switch to some New York style with out warning. Overall, the narrator is clearly one of my least favorite in the audio book genre. The narrator really detracted from the story.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

While trying to be objective, I don't have anything positive to say about this book or it's performance.

    Any additional comments?

At this time I HAVE NOT listened to any other book from this author or this series, I feel it's only fair to give the next book a go and see if it offers a better performance and story.

The four dead guards didn’t concern Mitch Rapp as much as the absence of the man they’d been paid to protect. Joe Rickman wasn’t just another foot soldier. For the last eight years Rickman had ran the CIA’s clandestine operations in Afghanistan. It was a murky job that involved working with virtually every disreputable figure in the Islamic Republic. More than a quarter billion dollars in cash had passed through Rickman’s hands during his tenure as the master of black ops and no one with a shred of sense wanted to know the details of how that money had been spent.

If you could sum up The Last Man in three words, what would they be?

    Three words? You're kidding right?

While the entire Vince Flynn series is wonderful. It truly is a treat to see an author get so far into a series and not lose sight of the characters, the emotion and twists. I highly recommend the series and this book. As always, the narrator George Guidall is extraordinarily talented and a real joy to listen to.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Stan Hurley. What an obnoxiously wonderful character.

Have you listened to any of George Guidall’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

AAA+Which by the way is a better rating than some countries! He is always remarkable.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

My eyes were wide at the narrative of Mitch Raps rant to the Afgan Local Police. Riveting.

    Any additional comments?

Please Vince, you can have my money... Write more Mitch Rapp books.

    Yes. I enjoy the series.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

If the story flowed better. It seemed very jagged. So much time took describing things that the story just didn't move.

Would you ever listen to anything by Alan Furst again?

    Probably not.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

    George is fantastic

What character would you cut from Night Soldiers?

    I couldn't even keep track.

    Any additional comments?

The first book (out of about 80) I just couldn't finish.

"If Robert Littell didn't invent the American spy novel," says Tom Clancy, "he should have." In this spectacular Cold-War-as-Alice-in-Wonderland epic, Littell, "the American le Carre," takes us down the rabbit hole and into the labyrinthine world of espionage that has been the CIA for the last half-century. "Ostensibly a single novel, [The Company] can also be read as an anthology of cracking good spy stories," says Publishers Weekly.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Its not for everyone. But, I would put this book at the top of my favorites.

What did you like best about this story?

The depth of the story across a significant period of history that truly shows how plots unravel over time and distance.

Have you listened to any of Scott Brick’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes. He is always good. However, I will have to criticize the producers and audio engineers for sometime NOT allowing a proper segue from plot line to plot line. There are many times there is no pause and you don't realize that you have just switched scenes. I had to back up a few times to catch that.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

"As close as you can get to the CIA with out the Freedom of Information Act."

    Any additional comments?

    Loved it.

  • Covert Warriors: Presidential Agent Series, Book 7

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

This book is an absolute joke. After investing in a continually exciting series, I had higher expectations. The story certainly builds to a great picture of an emotionally wrecked and president who is portrayed by the narrator as truly out of his mind. But that is about all you will get from this book. Plot lines that never really wrap up and so much

What do you think your next listen will be?

I will, from now on, avoid ALL books with Author or Co-Author William E. Butterworth IV. He should stick to pancake syrup.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

In the other books, the narrator did a great job. His portrayal of a bizarre and paranoid president was so extreme that as a listener, you can't wait to find out how his world finally get unraveled or fixed. But in the end, the narrator, producer, etc. All made the big character build for nothing.

What character would you cut from Covert Warriors?

Not a character, I would certainly fire William E. Butterworth IV and send him back to the mail room. Clearly his involvement in this series is a true mistake.

    Any additional comments?

Save your money. This book is not even in the same league as the others. Just pretend this on doesn't exist.

It's not a surprise that the original narrator did not perform this book. A story that just didn't hold up to the others.
