I love listening to books by Beverly Lewis. Her rendition of the plain life, complete with authentic details, is very enjoyable. I grew up in Amish and Mennonite country, and I love the little tidbits of theology intermingled so expertly within the storyline. Very few "English" folks realize the complexity of the plain life, but the rigid expectations to conform precisely to the old ways are explained in an authentic yet easily understood manner.
The author does an excellent job of filling in key areas of background from the 2 prior books in this series, and it does stand alone by itself. However, it is far more enjoyable when read in order. I have found the "magic medicines" to be extremely interesting, as well as plausible "real life for the era" stories. It is obvious that considerable research went into the hunting, gathering, methods of construction of both lodging and tools used, as well as the landscape and fauna of para-glacial lands. Not only are the books great entertainment, they are educational.
I do get tired of the sex scenes, but that's just my personal preference. They are tastefully done. The interplay between the main characters is fascinating. Personally, I have the entire 6 book series stored on my iPod and I listen to them at least once a year, sometimes more often. This particular book seems to have a slower speaking speed than I'm accustomed to, but still an excellent listen.
Prior to listening to Inheritance, I re-listened to the first 3 books. Not only did I find the continuation to be seamless, the book does have the ability to stand alone if the first books weren't read. I was a bit disappointed with the ending. But it was very enjoyable to watch the maturing of the characters I had come to love as well as to really enlarge upon Rowan (sp?) and the people of Carver Hall.
While working the exercises would be easier from a hard copy of the book, I found it very beneficial to listen (several times) while driving or working around the house, even as I drift off to sleep. Narration by the author was authentic and enjoyable; the content was very thought provoking. I have enjoyed all her books, but this one is stellar for spiritual growth.
