Vikram Chandra's novel draws the reader deep into the life of Inspector Sartaj Singh - and into the criminal underworld of Ganesh Gaitonde, the most wanted gangster in India. Sartaj, one of the very few Sikhs on the Mumbai police force, is used to being identified by his turban, beard and the sharp cut of his trousers. But "the silky Sikh" is now past 40, his marriage is over, and his career prospects are on the slide.

I love this book, and before I listened to it on audio, I had already read it several times. The book is rich with detail, the characters are complex and interesting, and the book has several layers of sub-story and plot that all relate to the overall theme of the book. I would give this book five stars, easily, but I have to agree that I was disappointed in the reading of this book.

The characters sound the same, and sometimes it is difficult to follow because there isn't much differentiation to let you know who is saying or doing what. I had no difficulty at all in understanding what was said as a result of the accent. However, I would have really liked to hear more character variety and more than one accent..as people from diverse parts of the country, or from various classes, would all sound differently.

It's a question as old as time itself: which is better, the zombie or the unicorn? In this anthology, edited by Holly Black and Justine Larbalestier (unicorn and zombie, respectively), strong arguments are made for both sides in the form of short stories. Half of the stories portray the strengths - for good and evil - of unicorns and half show the good (and really, really bad-ass) side of zombies.

I was disappointed in this book. The quality of the writing was inconsistent. I found some stories to be outright revolting. I do have to agree the that the premise is a funny one, and I was really looking forward to this comic aspect..but that wasn't there so much with this series of short stories.
