"Pre Req's not Required."
I have grown to love SEP books. They are fun, easy reads with strong female leads. I hadn't read Fancy Pants or the other book that followed so I was a little worried that I'd be lost. Not so. It's an easy listen, the narrator is great and SEP provides enough background info on the characters that the story is easy to follow. I loved meg's character. She is smart, strong and determined to make it on her own after her family cuts her off. Ted is just hot! I loved their chemistry and I loved the characters in this small texas town. I was sad when the story ended.
"Very Fun Read"
It was a nice surprise. This is another one of those books I've had in my library for a long time and finally decided to give it a go. I'm glad I did. This is the perfect book to listen to while on vacation. It is funny and entertaining and the story moves along and wraps with a happy ending!
If you liked Bridget Jones then you'll probably like this. It has the same humor and some similar characteristics. In this book, Willow doesn't even know how adorable she is and like Bridget, Willow has 2 men in the works - a good one and a bad one. The development is just fun and light.
I really didn't like Luke's voice. That is one aspect of the narration that I would have changed. It sounded so forced and I had a hard time listening to his character.
I really liked Willow. She is funny and self deprecating with loads of friends and family that love her.
A fun, lighthearted listen. I"m glad I finally gave it a chance.
"Better than the First!"
Yes, this was SO much better than book 1. The characters are still having amaze balls sex but at least there is a story and character development and some light suspense. Really enjoyed this and now I have to wait until June for the 3rd installment. Oh no!
OH my god, the sex scene at the concert was WAY hot.
Worth the download!
"oh boy, I'm reading porn!"
This is a fun romp of a read. With that said, it is also a mixed bag of good and bad. At times, I was bored because it mimicked so much of FSOG. And believe me, while I tore through that book, I wasn't in love with it - it was hot but also totally ridiculous. I'm not sure which story came first, this one or FSOG but the stories are very similar. Now I'm not bagging on these books because clearly i've read both and enjoyed both so I just want to set expectations - both books are sexy, hot and poorly written, but hot and fun! So if you need to escape and just want some perfect body, everyone has an organism then, my friends you have found your story.
drama-rama! Bring on book 2.
No, and she did a great job. Jill R. gave us Eva having an organism for most of this book so i imagine she has perfect skin and a smile just from faking it! I hope she had fun narrating this book.
No because there isn't a real story, just hot sex. I can download that right?
have fun.....
"Riviting, disburbing and unable to stop listening"
I think this story is compelling either way but I did really appreciate Sandy Rustin's narration. She has a very young childlike voice and it was perfect for hearing Jenna's story.
This book was so captivating. Jenna takes you inside the cult that is Scientology and shares so much more than I knew about the church. I've always been curious and have read a few other books on the topic but have never heard it from a child's perspective. It was truly heart breaking. There are so many bizarro rules and downright unethical moments that she and others like her had (and have) to endure that I was left speechless. What Scientology puts children and families through is no less than traumatic and abusive. This is a must listen - it is really disturbing and absolutely engrossing.
"Sad and Serious"
Yes I've read many of his books and I really love his stories. They are always entertaining - and many have been adapted into movies which goes to show you that he can write a story for the masses where the characters are likeable, the story is interesting balancing some serious trauma with self deprecating humor. The male character is always so terribly lovable and so seriously flawed. This book however is different. It didn't fall in this camp. It centers around a woman who is mother, wife, doctor and totally miserable. Katie has always done the right thing and she is married to the angriest man in Halloway (her husband's true weekly column self) and did i mention that she is miserable. The story is funny at times, but mostly I think it is serious and the end was just sad. It felt hopeless and serious.
I liked her impressions of goodnews and Katie. You can hear in her voice how f'in fed up Katie is with her husband, with her life, with her lover, and with goodnews - ahh just with it all. She becomes unglued as her husband lets go of his anger and works at becoming more centered and that feeling of her losing her bearings felt very real. Much of this book felt like witnessing an uncomfortable conversation between friends - you know the kind. You get invited to someone's house and they are actually so fed up with each other that they can't even maintain the illusion of marital civility. Some of the dialogue felt like that.
If you want a really good laugh, read Juliet Naked. That by far is one of my all time favorite Nick Hornby books.
"MIssing romantic buildup"
I liked that New Orleans serves as the backdrop to Kill and Tell because it only positively highlights the parallel story threads: one of suspense and mystery and the other of sexy something. Unfortunately, this audio book felt a little lopsided and unbalanced. On the one hand you have a nice suspenseful mystery; and it was well developed and that is the saving grace of this book. Why was Karen’s father killed? What is the deal with that little black book? What is the connection to Vietnam? And then we have the almost romantic story. The story was not developed and it left me wanting for more. Mark and Karen hook up and have incredibly sexual chemistry and after, I don't know, 36 total hours in bed, they declare their love, stop using condoms and decide to get married. It felt a little too drunken Vegas for me and I didn't see the purpose of the love declaration or marriage. Come on kids, just keep having great sex. Why ruin the story with marriage and love! It felt forced - as if it wanted to be a romance book and just didn't know how to get there. I need the emotional chemistry, courting, chasing, funny and sweet back and forth to be integral to my romance favorites. Kill and Tell was missing that.
Good - the mystery was resolved and I was even a little surprised.
I like her narration - she has a nice voice, and is able to give everyone voice. She knows how to make her leading men sound sexy.
"Easy, Fun and Light"
Yes because Davina Porter's voice has range and i thought she added to the comedy and hijinks of the poor, fallen aristocratic 6. This was a fun, very likable story!
I liked all the characters but Sir Philip was my favorite because he was the most audacious and most unscrupulous of the 6. He made me laugh. Next in line is Lady Fortescue because she is trying to keep it together even if that means a little thievery. Plus I appreciated her strong will and temperament. She is the antithesis of the reigning aristocracy - she is practical and level headed.
I purchased this book on sale a while back and I'm so glad I did. I was introduced to this clever little series and I hope more sales come along because I'd love to listen to more!
"Robert Petkoff nailed this!"
Absolutely. I REALLY enjoyed this audio - there is so much to like about this listen. As far as I'm concerned, this is a hidden gem among the audible library files. This book has it all...it's funny, and sad, thoughtful, laugh out loud, cynical and smart. The protagonist is a lonely, lovable man-child. Finn is a successful and self deprecating advertising copywriter who has come to an impasse in his life and his typical "let me spin this &*^%" no longer works because his past has caught up with him and he has to face some tough truths.
Finn's sense of humor. His character reminded me of a Nick Hornby character. He is a vulnerable, likeable, as well as flawed.
Robert Petkoff was great. This was my first listen by him and he was so good. He brought life to every character and nailed it!
Worth a credit and time. Enjoy!
"American Psycho"
I plan to re listen to the first half of the book, at least the first two hours because this is where we meet Tom, a con man with a broken past and an unhappy childhood. Clearly I am naive because just a con man couldn't be farther from the truth. Ripley is a narcissistic young man looking to get ahead and make it big time by lying, forgery and committing murder. I want to re listen to it because I wasn't expecting to listen to the tale of a full blow psychopath. This audio was slow, soft and dangerous. I have never watched the movie and now I will.
I especially like that this was a book written in the 50's because this era evokes this false illusion that America was sweet as pie and Ripley's character is just the opposite of that. Ripley plays the part of a well bred, sweet, caring man all the while he is waving his arrogance in front of the reader and HE expects to be caught but no one wants to see what is right in front of them - a deadly poser.
I read a review that mentioned that they had to remind their self not too sympathize with him because he is in the end a calculating killer. I found myself doing the same at times. I got sucked into his story of parasitic survival. Tom Ripley is the American Psycho.
I really enjoyed this audio and plan to continue the series. It had glamour, suspense, travel, murder and youthful naivete all on its side.
"Jamie ruined me for all others!"
Diane Gabaldon's book Outlander ruined me. Nah, what am i saying....Jamie ruined me. I can't say this is a bad book, it is just not a great book. Plus, I'm super biased. Any book where the main character is a Scottish sexy warrior automatically warrants a comparison to Jamie and if you've read Outlander, then you know there is no comparison. So the Chief is just okay. The beginning starts off interesting with what happens after the death of Wallace. Instead of getting sucked into a historical romance novel, it turned into soft porn with repetitive reminders of the Cheif's ripping biceps and stomach muscles and arms, and hamstrings, and a big *&^ and, well, you get the point.
Try a different narrator! This just wasn't the voice for a hot, sexy Scottish warrior. This voice just didn't work for this character. But I will admit to secretly enjoying it (at least for the first few hours) because his voice just made me laugh. Think Bob Barker. Not Jamie and not Jamie and Claire's spark - that is for sure!
