"Not For Everyone"
This book has received a lot of negative ratings. I agree it is not a book for everyone's tastes. It's not an easy listen, but the narration is perfect. I loved the book. I felt like I was inside Veronica's confused and guilt-ridden head... experiencing all the twists and turns that happen when trying to make sense of things after a tragedy, on top of a lifetime of hurt. I will go back and listen again.
"Disturbing, Uncomfortable - Real Crime Fiction"
This is my first exposure to David Peace and his writing style. I read the other reviews so I had an idea of what to expect. I was immediately drawn in to this world of corruption, secrecy, violence, brutality, and ugliness. He tells the story unapologetically, in no-holds-barred detail. It made me nauseous at times, but I could not put it down. It is not an easy listen, in that the subject matter is graphic, disturbing, and raw. All this said, I would listen again... now. This is a story that will stay long after the listen. It is not for everyone, but it is certainly one I would recommend to anyone looking for a graphic, realistic picture of a horrific world that most of us, thankfully, know nothing about. I look forward to the remainder of the Quartet being offered. If it takes too long, I may have to resort to reading them!
"Slow... slow... slow"
I really wanted to like this audiobook. It should have been intriguing, given the subject an all. Alas, I was disappointed... poor narration... weak writing... tedious and slow. I'm glad others enjoyed it... not for me.
"Another Awesome Scarpetta Adventure"
I have been a huge fan of Patricia Cornwell, and namely Kay Scarpetta, since Postmortem. This newest installment is faithful to her outstanding ability to captivate and surprise with unexpected twists and turns. As always, the door remains open for another bizarre, mysterious, and exciting case for Scarpetta to solve. Loved it!
"Absolutely Brilliant!"
Amazing story - captivating from the start - grabs you and does not let go. Simply the BEST narrator. I will eagerly await more selections from William Boyd. Restless is definitely one to listen to again and again. Wow!
"Worth a listen"
Like others, I found myself not really liking the main character. Unlike others, that is exactly what I did like about Asylum. I do not believe the author wanted the reader/listener to like Stella. The story is told from a clinical viewpoint, that is, the voice of the Psychiatrist and not of the patient. I came away feeling as if I needed to listen again with Peter as the focus... which is exactly what I intend to do.
"Awesome"
I am partial to dark, atmospheric books... especially when they are set in Ireland. I loved Timothy Dalton's reading. His voice is perfect for the role of Quirke. I will eagerly await other cases for Quirke to investigate.
"OUTSTANDING!"
I loved this book! I absolutely got lost in the tales. This is storytelling at it's best!
"Interesting and Insightful"
I truly enjoyed hearing Elissa Wall's story of survival and victory over a seemingly untouchable individual and his followers. I have given "Stolen Innocence" 4 stars instead of 5 due to the narration. At times her voice was quite irritating. Overall, it is a great book.
