Iain Sinclair, Marquis of Alynwick, is certain there is a special hell for him. An unrepentant rake, he holds nothing sacred - except for beautiful Elizabeth York. For years, Alynwick has tried to forget the woman he loved so well, and treated so badly. A woman who could hold nothing in her heart for him but hatred. All of society believes Elizabeth, the blind daughter of a duke, to be a proper young lady. But no one knows of her wanton affair with Alynwick.

The concept of the story is good. However the dialog between the characters was lacking and the writing repetitive.

Although not exclusively, I do read a lot of crime novels and I am perplexed by the good ratings this one received. There are a lot of good crime fiction authors out there but this is not one. I do make allowances for a novel considering the fact that it is entertainment and does not need to be completely realistic. But this Novel was just bad. The characters are improbable and inconsistent. The dialog is unrealistic and cheesy. The actions of the characters are erratic. The overall idea of the story is good; the rest is just not good. I can imagine that if you are a male seeking a fantasy fulfilling story of a rich tough guy that can have his cake and eat it too and do not care much about the literature value, this is a story for you.

Victorian London is a cesspool of crime, and Scotland Yard has only 12 detectives - known as “The Murder Squad” - to investigate thousands of murders every month. Created after the Metropolitan Police’s spectacular failure to capture Jack the Ripper, The Murder Squad suffers rampant public contempt. They have failed their citizens. When Walter Day, the squad’s newest hire, is assigned the case of the murdered detective, he finds a strange ally in the Yard’s first forensic pathologist, Dr. Bernard Kingsley.

I enjoy historical mysteries and thrillers and this could have been a great one, but it wasn’t. It stared out very promising but never really peaked and the ending seemed hurried and underdeveloped. Some scenes were exceptionally well written and others lacked tremendously. Some actions of the characters seemed random and did not benefit the story. Perhaps more research of Victorian London would have helped with character development and cut down of the Americanisms that were not used much in that time period. I would describe this book as “not bad but needing polish”. Overall a capable author with potential. I think I would read his next book just to see if it gets better.

Miss Linnet Berry Thrynne is a Beauty... Naturally, she's betrothed to a Beast. Piers Yelverton, Earl of Marchant, lives in a castle in Wales where, it is rumored, his bad temper flays everyone he crosses. And rumor also has it that a wound has left the earl immune to the charms of any woman. Linnet is not just any woman. She is more than merely lovely: her wit and charm brought a prince to his knees. She estimates the earl will fall madly in love - in just two weeks. She is more than merely lovely: her wit and charm brought a prince to his knees.

Be careful what you wish for. Traveling abroad with her mother at the turn of the 20th century to seek a titled husband, beautiful, vivacious Cora Cash, whose family mansion in Newport dwarfs the Vanderbilts’, suddenly finds herself Duchess of Wareham, married to Ivo, the most eligible bachelor in England. Nothing is quite as it seems, however: Ivo is withdrawn and secretive, and the English social scene is full of traps and betrayals.

I was delighted to listen to a romance novel that was written intelligently, witty and romantic. This story was not burdened with graphic sex or cheesy unrealistic scenes. Ms Goodwin is a wonderful story teller. The Narrator did a great job and only added to the experience.
