Wow, loved this book. Because I got this book from audible for free, I wasn't expecting much, but was I mistaken. Action packed the whole way. Without a doubt if I were to nit pick I could find fault but the fact that I finished this book in 3 days says it all.

If you like modern day cloak and dagger / spy books get this - you won't be disappointed.

They were the young ones, the bright ones, the ones with the dreams. From the Nazi-prowled wastes of North Africa to the bloody corridors of Europe, they honorably answered the call. War - it was their duty, their job, their life. They marched off as boys and they came back - those who made it - as soldiers and professionals forged in the heat of battle....

Wilfred, knight of Ivanhoe, the son of Cedric the Saxon, is in love with his father's ward, Rowena. Cedric, however, wishes her to marry Athelstane, a descendant of the royal Saxon line, whom Cedric hopes will restore the Saxon succession. With a colorful cast of chivalric knights and fair ladies, this action-filled novel comes complete with feats of derring-do, the pageantry of a tournament, and a great flame-engulfed castle - all of which makes it the most enthralling of Scott's creations.

It's well written but don't forget, it was published in 1820 so uses the language of the day where it takes a lot to say a little. Also the story is not quiet as I remember it. It's worth a listen if it's on special but not sure if I'd buy it otherwise.

Always leave a little salt on the bread. Ikey Solomon's favorite saying is also his way of doing business, and in the business of thieving he's very successful indeed. Ikey's partner in crime is his mistress, the forthright Mary Abacus, until misfortune befalls them. They are parted and each must make the harsh journey from thriving nineteenth century London to the convict settlement of Van Diemen's Land.

    Story

I enjoyed it but I found it difficult for a long time to find a character to like. The book has a bit of a dark feel about it and definitely wouldn't call it uplifting.

Having said that, things do change and it's worth persisting with.Without giving away the ending of the first book, it ends in a way that the second book sounds as if things may be a bit brighter. I'll probably get the second book.

    Excellent performance by Vic Bevine.
