I LOVED this book. I love Geraldine Brooks in general but this was by far my favorite and a must listen. I was sursprised by the few negative comments on the narration, I found it outstanding and perfectly suited to the story. Very, very well done. I was never so disappointed to have an audiobook finish. The story is grim and gruesome, but the detail and perserverance are inspiring. Simply amazing, do not miss this one if you enjoy historical fiction, especially this time period even a little bit.
Horrible huge waste of time and money. Narration was so bad and the story went for boring to ridiculous. It's the first time I couldn't finish a listen and was never so happy to hit delete when it was over. Believe the other reviews: Don't Bother!!!
I heard the author on a talk radio show and was inspired to listen to this although I usually don't read or listen to this type of novel. It was ok. For something as horrible as happened to one of the characters, the description of the ordeal was lame. Characters were predictable and the investigator had too many things go his way making the story kind of ridiculous. Again, it was all right for a change of pace. If you usually like this author, I'm guessing you'll love it.
I LOVED listening to this book. Katherine Kellgren is truly gifted. It was not so much the story that kept me enthralled, but the narration and descption of an an era I so love to study. If you are even mildly interested in the Gilded Age do not miss this one.
I stumbled across this title and was mildly interesed. What luck! This was an incredible audio book. I was sorry when it ended and the only aspect I regret was not having anything visual to see. Don't miss this fascinating listen!!
I'm not sure what was worse, the banal, irritating dialogue, the ridiculously lame predictable story, the weak uninspired characters or without question, the worst narration I have ever endured. DO NOT WASTE YOUR $$ or credits. This was fingernails on a chalk board BAD, BAD, BAD. I am one of those who HAS to finish a listen, no matter how bad and I kept hoping something would happen. It never did and I never got used to the annoying pathetic narration. SO glad to have finished it and hit the delete key with great relish.
I got totally into this listen and couldn't turn it off, but I found it rambled at times and the ending was extremely predictable for a story that had such complex characters. A bit disapointing.
I read Ken Follet's Pillars of the Earth and loved the first half of it and hated the second half. This one was excellent and I enjoyed the entire book. The historical content is superb and the story was compelling. I cannot wait for the next saga.
This is the first audio book I listen to. I had read it many years ago and I loved hearing it again from a different perspective. The narration was superb!
I enjoyed this book. The narration was quite good, though some of the voices were overdone. I wish there was more to the story!!
