  • California: A History

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 21 mins)
    • By Kevin Starr
    • Narrated By Jonathan Davis

Acclaimed author, historian, and Guggenheim Fellow Kevin Starr is a professor at the University of Southern California. His extensive knowledge shines through this concise, yet comprehensive, depiction of the most fascinating aspects in California's history. From its colonial beginnings through Governor Schwarzenegger's administration, the Golden State has become a uniquely American phenomenon that has enchanted people with the possibility of a better life.

Excellent book for fan of history or simply for one trying to understand how modern California became so fascinating, complex and the current struggles all the more fascinating. An excellent audio book for anyone doing a 2 day drive along the length of CA or with a 5 hour flight to CA.

  • Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 47 mins)
    • By Candice Millard
    • Narrated By Paul Michael
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

James A. Garfield may have been the most extraordinary man ever elected president. Born into abject poverty, he rose to become a wunderkind scholar, a Civil War hero, and a renowned and admired reformist congressman. Nominated for president against his will, he engaged in a fierce battle with the corrupt political establishment. But four months after his inauguration, a deranged office seeker tracked Garfield down and shot him in the back. But the shot didn’t kill Garfield. The drama of what happened subsequently is a powerful story of a nation in turmoil.

    "Outstanding: history, technology, & politics,"

This is a book that should appeal to anyone fascinated by history, politics, the emergence of technology in 1890s, the 'western frontier ' of the Midwest and of what forces cause the convergence of these as plot lines.

Besides the outstanding book's writing (and research) the author has a clever knack for good dialogue. This is a great book to listen to while driving--city driving or country, leisurely driving. I am lucky. I live in Washington DC so it fascinates me to drive by the modern locations where so many of these events take place. Don't miss out on a great book. THis might be the best Audible book that I have gotten this year. The narrator is terrific--he handles many accents in both genders really well. Some narrators spoil an otherwise very good book. This narrator adds to the story while not distracting the reader. Sometimes is 'sounds' like a well written play for radio.

This would make a great book for anyone planning a vacation or business trip to Washington DC. I'd like to suggest that Audible add a category for travel so that people can download books about the destinations where they plan to travel to.
