"Female reader, story by 1st person make narrator"
No. What on earth would possess them to hire a woman reader for a story told in the first person by a man?! Utterly distracting and changes the whole tone of the book. I got this on sale for $2.00 and paid too much. I couldn't even make it all the way through.
The story is fine. The reader was an awful choice for this piece.
Hire a male reader for a male narrator.
Listen to the sample for every book I buy to make sure the reader is not a ridiculously bad choice.
"Somehow both boring and salacious"
Because I love the play, I have now tried twice to make it through the book. Each time, I've made it halfway before giving up. It is at times extremely vulgar, which does not bother me. What does bother me is that when it's not vulgar, it's very boring. It's difficult to sympathize with any of the characters, who are themselves either repugnant or uninteresting. I desperately want to like Elphaba and care about her cause, but mostly I find her obnoxious.
"Ok, never great"
It was reasonably entertaining, but never really, really sad or really, really funny. I don't regret buying it, but after listening to it, I decided I did not need to listen to her other books.
