I didn't realize this was the actor who plays on the TV show Sleepy Hollow. (I don't care for the show, btw.) Tom Mison does a wonderful job of bringing Washington Irving's words to life. Wonderful voice by a great reader!
This is a great look into the minds of extremists. I had just watched a film called The Conspiracy, and they must have surely borrowed from Jon Ronson in the depiction of the Bilderberg Group. I love Jon Ronson's narration.
This was my first purchase of a book on Audible by Jon Ronson. Very compelling insights into ways we identify the psychopath, or label people as such. Jon also narrates, which is the most attractive feature of all his books here.
This is a collection of short writings. As such, it lacks the compelling nature of the other books here, in my humble opinion. Still excellent, however, since Ronson narrates.
Jon Ronson narrates this as well, and it is excellent, mostly because of his own insights as he reads his own words. This is my 4th Audible purchase of his books here. I would also have purchased The Men Who Stare at Goats, but the narrator is not Jon Ronson, and lacks the quality of his readings.
Okay...so I'll admit to having to listen to segments of this book over and over because I fall asleep during the night while it's playing. Not the fault of the book; this is just how I use Audible. This book is a treasure-trove of information and history about the early exploration re/the time just after Lewis and Clark expedition. I honestly can't give it a high enough recommendation, it is so excellent. The reader/narrator is fine and does an excellent job. If you're into history like me, you'll love it!
I've loved Bernard Cornwell's books. I read the many reviews, mostly positive, of this book, and I tend to like battle and war themes. I rarely read fiction, or even historical fiction, but tend to gravitate to actual historical accounts. Despite these preferences, I was willing to give this book a listen. Well, first of all, I tend to only listen to the Audible books at night, while in bed and going off to sleep. This is not a "sleep-inducing" book, by any means. I listened to this well-read book for about an hour, and the descriptions of carnage, rape and killing are very graphic. I'm not dismissing that this may be a great book. I can take it, just not at bed time. Perhaps it would be better for listening while doing some sort of physical activity, like exercising at the gym or walking, just not for trying to go off to sleep.
Having only listened to the first hour, I will refrain from giving a final review, and may come back and modify it later. I had read the negative reviews of it being too violent and lacking sympathetic characters. So far, that seems to be true, but I'll listen further to see if it becomes more compelling despite the gore and violence.
One of the best!
The description of the third brother, who is so compassionate.
I have bought many books here on Audible. I like the readings by Frederick Davidson. He brings the characters to life. Don't believe the reviews that "diss" him. I have many books which he narrates and he is magnificent in all of them!
Yes, I would listen again because there is so much information, presented very well. The amount of research is impressive, to say the least, and a great gift to any reader who is interested in the golden era of mountaineering as well as the impact of WWI on those who participated in the horrors of war in the trenches.
I have not listened to Enn Reitel before, but he is excellent and I'll be looking for more of his performances.
I wouldn't attempt to listen in one sitting, since it is a long book.
I just love Wade Davis for all the research he did for this book, and for the intelligent and cohesive weaving of a complicated story.
I was excited when I read all the 5 star reviews. I liked least that it did not meet my expectations. It is unrelentingly grim.
History. I'm listening to Into the Silence by Wade Davis, also The History of Rome by Titus Livy. Both are beyond excellent.
A bit annoying, and overdone, though he does do an excellent job with dialects and different characters.
I have tried repeatedly to resume listening to this book, hoping it will improve. So far, not.
