For 20 years Earth has been exploring the stars using faster-than-light stardrives in which a manmade black hole pulls the ship through space. Dangerous to themselves and everything in the vicinity, the24 starships, led by the flagship Horizon, have opened up new worlds to colonize. Now mankind stands on the brink of a momentous breakthrough: Hyperidor drives; faster-than-light travel that is inexpensive, risk free, and available to all.

I tried to like it. The plot sounded excellent but the narrator was very boring and monotone. The characters were very flat and I never really cared for any of them. I hate to give a bad review but this story needs some work. The narrator even made a mistake, swore, then cleared his throat and it was not edited out. I really think the narrator killed the story. I'll have to get the book and read it for myself. The premise sounds like solid sci-fi and is worth a second shot. I will give this author another chance, but I did waste time and a credit on this one.

John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First, he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce - and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So, we fight, to defend Earth and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding.

Great concept, excellent characters, and plenty of action. I will read all the books in this series. Best science fiction I have read in a long time.
