Myranda Celeste is a young woman more interested in staying alive than being a hero. Orphaned by a continent-spanning war that has gone on for decades too long and shunned for failing to support it, she has been on the move since she was only a child. One can hardly blame her when she thinks that the chance discovery of a fallen soldier's priceless cargo is the moment that will change her life. No one could predict just how great that change would be. It will lead her through an adventure of rebels and generals, of wizards and warriors, and of beasts both noble and monstrous.

Five days after Owen Zastava Pitt pushed his insufferable boss out of a 14th story window, he woke up in the hospital with a scarred face, an unbelievable memory, and a job offer. It turns out that monsters are real. All the things from myth, legend, and B-movies are out there, waiting in the shadows. Some of them are evil, and some are just hungry. Monster Hunter International is the premier eradication company in the business. And now Owen is their newest recruit.

    Any additional comments?

The story is OK. Raise it a star if you like listening to characters opine rapturously about detailed gun and ordinance specifications; Raise it two stars if you are a Southerner, Tea Party adherent, or ex military (particularly the portion of the military that fires guns often (e.g. not the Navy Nuke type I was)). Lower it a star if you are a Northerner or a New Englander; lower it two stars if you are a serious, granola-crunching liberal or, heaven-forbid, French.
