Maddie Adams doesn't mean to make the worst impression possible with her new boss. Nor does she intend to work as his temp Christmas nanny - especially when Lyle Sutherland inspires spicy flirtation and full-on naughty thoughts.

I downloaded this, expecting literary - or at least decent - fiction. Then I was trapped in my car with this drivel for hours. This is a hackneyed "love story," badly written and badly read.

    Stay away!

Mary Ingles was 23, happily married, and pregnant with her third child when Shawnee Indians invaded her peaceful Virginia settlement in 1755 and kidnapped her, leaving behind a bloody massacre. For months they held her captive. But nothing could imprison her spirit. With the rushing Ohio River as her guide, Mary Ingles walked one thousand miles through an untamed wilderness no white woman had ever seen.

Great story, but I couldn't stand the narration. Thom's voice is pleasant enough, but his pacing and cadence are completely wrong and very off-putting. He doesn't pause long enough when it's called for, nor does his delivery change when the story calls for it.

Because I was enjoying the story, I ended up getting the book on Kindle.

  • Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 29 mins)

    • Narrated By Karen White

    Story
    (1013)

Barbara Demick's Nothing to Envy follows the lives of six North Koreans over fifteen years - a chaotic period that saw the death of Kim Il-sung and the unchallenged rise to power of his son, Kim Jong-il, and the devastation of a far-ranging famine that killed one-fifth of the population. Taking us into a landscape never before seen, Demick brings to life what it means to be an average Korean citizen, living under the most repressive totalitarian regime today.

I couldn't endure more than about half an hour of this atrocious narration. Her voice and speaking style were completely ill suited to the content. White sounded like a fashion show commentator - not the right match for a book about North Korea.
To make matters worse, her timing and phrasing were off as well. Ugh.

It's the start of Hollywood on Hudson, and New York City is swept up in the glamour. Every night, the red carpet rolls out for movie stars arriving at premieres in limos; the most exclusive restaurants close for private parties for wealthy producers and preeminent directors; and thousands of fans gather with the paparazzi, hoping to catch a glimpse of the most famous and beautiful faces in the world. With this many celebrities in town, special task force NYPD Red is on high alert - and they can't afford to make a single mistake.

I earn my living as a writer, and I found myself cringing every few minutes listening to this trite, almost laughable drivel. I couldn't make it past the first 30 minutes. Just horrible.
