  • Kansas Evolution Hearings: Day 1 (5/5/05)

A subcommittee of the Kansas Board of Education holds hearings on whether the state's science curriculum should permit alternate theories to be taught alongside evolution. During the first three days of hearings, proponents of intelligent design present their views. They are represented by a retired lawyer, John Calvert, who heads the Intelligent Design Network of Shawnee Mission, Kansas.

    Sue says: "A must listen . . ."
    "Interesting, and somewhat scarey"
    Overall

I would disagree with a previous reviewer who said that this was not about intelligent design. The driving force behind the "minority report" is the argument that there is a creator that designed the world. Whether this is "intelligent design" or "creationism" or some other flavor of the almighty being, it all comes down to there being a supernatural cause for the world. I don't know if this is true or not. I truly wish I had the faith that some possess; however, this faith is not the basis for science. Science seeks out an explanation for various phenomena and continues that quest despite initial frustrations at not finding an answer. By giving up and saying "it was God", is abhorent to a true scientist who strives to find answers.

I guess I'm ranting much more than I should, but take a listen and decide for yourself.

From the author of The New York Times best sellers Treason and Slander comes an updated Ann Coulter compendium, complete with reader responses and television and talk radio transcripts (Couric, Donahue, Franken). With titles like "Would Mohamed Atta Object to Armed Pilots?", "9 out of 10 Caribou Support Drilling", and "Liberal Pimps for Clintonism", How to Talk to a Liberal covers Coulter's waterfront on her favorite issues and targets, from national security to Hollywood.

    "Punchlines minus the punch"
    Overall

I wish Ann would do some more research and analysis - just like her previous books, it is lacking. If she really wants to punish the liberals and make them scream in submission, then BACK IT UP with some facts.... Has she heard of footnotes.... or a bibliography?

A New York Times best seller, Founding Brothers is an engrossing work of nonfiction from National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize winner Joseph J. Ellis. It is a book that uncovers the substance behind many of our most cherished historical tales. Here are six fascinating, well-researched chapters involving such icons as George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison.

    Vernon says: "Remarkably moving book"
    "Interesting"
    Overall

This is one to take in sections (at least for me); otherwise it become somewhat bogged down.
Joseph Ellis did lose his university position, but not due to plagarism. He had lied about serving in the US military in Vietnam - he did not. Plagarism did not come into the equation.
Others have taken exception to his portrayal of Jefferson: Ellis called him a liar; isn't the irony delicious?

  • A Short History of Nearly Everything

Bill Bryson has been an enormously popular author both for his travel books and for his books on the English language. Now, this beloved comic genius turns his attention to science. Although he doesn't know anything about the subject (at first), he is eager to learn, and takes information that he gets from the world's leading experts and explains it to us in a way that makes it exciting and relevant.

Corby says: "Very informative, fun to listen to"
    "Amazing"
    Overall

This gives a very accurate and entertaining representation of .... well.... nearly everything! It is an exploration of science, but it is more heavily weighted into the physical sciences (physics, astronomy and the like). It does cover a lot of the biological science, but mainly on a macroscopic level. DNA and mitochondria are discussed, but there is not much on physiology - which is good because that is not the focus of this book. I would absolutely LOVE it if Bryson would try to tackle that subject. He has the ability to clarify many subjects without diluting the information to any significant degree - he hits the important highlights.
I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone interested in the would around us and inside of us.
