If you liked The Road, you’ll love the Pesthouse. If you found the Road, drawn out, boring with a lackluster finish, you won’t like The Pesthouse. Count me in with the second group. This is my second attempt to find a good book that deals with the post-apocalyptic America theme, but after reading both The Pesthouse and The Road, I’m still looking
This book ROCKS! This is a wonderful representation of classic Joseph Wambaugh. Funny and gritty. The LAPD cops in this book are real people not the shallow righteous crime fighters of TV and movies. I LOVED this old school style Wambaugh novel and I can't recommend it too much!
Finally a good piece of fiction with a post-apocalyptic America theme. This book is everything that the Road and the Pesthouse were not. Nightwalker has a cool main character, its interesting, exciting and a fun to read. This book rocks! I can wait read the sequel.
When I first ordered this title I was expecting to hear an exciting, gripping first-hand account of the experiences of an actual African "Boy Soldier". But what I heard was the dry, lackluster, emotionless reading of a poorly ghost written book. As a former Viet Nam combat vet myself, I feel that the book's matter fact description of the fog and intensity of jungle warfare greatly misses the mark.
As a result I give A Long Way Gone a guarded recommendation. If you like reading textbook accounts of historical events, then you'll love this book
This book read like an Afghani Uncle Tom's Cabin. With Simon Legree, characterized by the evil husband. The cruel pre civil war pro slave owning Southern Government, symbolize by the harsh Taliban. And of course, the two noble slaves Uncle Tom and Eliza, represented by the two long-suffering wives. A true tear jerker. A chick’s book on steroids. Listening to this book was a painful waste of 11 hours and 43 min of my life.
