The wonder of this book is that most of us intimately understand the subject matter, and Follet does a wonderful job of creating the emotion and devastation associated with this tumultuous era in World History.
He seamlessly weaves the characters together in a believable and dignified way. The comparisons of cultures and the representative actors is achieved in a subtle and believable manner. I could not be more impressed with his point of view on what it would have been like to witness some of the 20th Century's most notable events.
I highly recommend this book, as it is exactly what an audio book should be: entertaining, representative of a unique point of view, and enjoyable!
I am embarrassed to say that I almost moved past this book, as I did not have the patience to tolerate being unable to predict the direction of this book. The action comes so fast and furious that I left behind my misgivings and held on for a realistic ride through the eyes of an archetypical American young man--brutally honest despite the risk to himself.
This book is candid, the language direct, and a the action real and believable. This book is a large mirror for our Modern America, and at times you likely will not like what you see. Many themes are woven together to create this masterpiece: some delicate, love and longing, and some violent, drugs, terrorism, and theft! However, of hero, Theo, always has a good reason for his conduct and you cannot help but find sympathy for this flawed young man.
This book is for anyone who loves the bitter sweet reality of this human experience. Theo happens to live on the edge, but it is through this lens that we see the real message: the human being is capable of joy despite horrible and devastating loss. Love finds its way into our hearts despite time blasting away youth's innocence.
Could have been more effective in a 5 hour book. Way too repetitive.
Sorry, as I have giving a negative review but this was not good.
Grisham utilizes this famous and familiar setting and cast of characters in a truly remarkable way! This book was genuine, sincere, and very entertaining. As a lawyer I enjoyed the suspense created through this intensely battled will-contest. Grisham was able to weave the story and the action in such a believable way that I found myself upset when the book ended.
I highly recommend this title for anyone interested in a good legal drama that thankfully does not require over the top death and violence. This is a human drama with many twists and turns. The action is intense and realistic--no hyperbole required here as the human drama more than satisfies!
I did not know what to expect from this monster book, as I just dove in without any background! It is an amazing feat of fiction, and the performances by the various artists are amazing!
I love exploring new authors and this is my first experience with Haruki Murakami--could not be more impressed!
The sci-fi overtures are limited, as this book is more about human beings and what drives them. The older I get, the more I can relate to many of these complex human themes.
Do not doubt the value of this purchase for a second! Excellent Book!
This book is one of those wonderful surprises that highlight the true genius of the human imagination. The concept is simple, and the writing is excellent. Ken Grimwood's insight into the future world from the point of view of 1986 is stunning--Muslim Extremism! He is able to effectively present the excitement and emotion of being stuck in a perpetual 25 year time loop. It really is about second, and third, and fourth chances etc. What would you do differently if you were able to re-live your vulnerable and naive early twenties until 43?
I cannot speak highly enough of this book, and wish Mr. Grimwood would have kept his theme going longer.
Take a Kaplan Course, as this thing was a colossal waste of time. They ramble on and one without really any great insight into how to tackle the many challenges present in the LSAT!
This book traces the adventures of one greatly flawed man whom finds redemption and peace in a loyalty born of a new world!
I cannot speak highly enough of this novel, and I wish that it would have just kept going on and on.
I can hear the sounds of the busy streets, and the friendships could not be more convincing!
Hats off to Mr. Roberts and Mr. Bower as both have combined to create a wonderful epic masterpiece!!!
I found this book painful! I hated everything about it. I for the life of me cannot figure out all the hype. This book basically is a gigantic Penthouse Letters, with very little interesting plot! I wasted my money, and cannot believe that people actually like this nonsense.
I have never been so disappointed in a book, as it started out ok. Oh, and the narrator stinks too. I am less intelligent as a result of this book!
Orhan Pamuk masterfully illustrates the fate of one whom misses his last chance for love. This tragedy is set in a polarized political and religious climate, that lends excitement and illumination to the underlying character analysis.
The book is not one you can turn up to 3x speed and breeze through. I struggled a little with some of the themes, but at the end of the day I really enjoyed this unique world presented in Snow. The story twists and turns and finds truth along the way!
