I am so sad that there is not another book in this series for me to listen to. I really love B. B. Larson. He jumps right into the action, peppering the book with humor and an appropriate amount of human interaction. This is the kind of book I really hate finishing only because I know there isn't another one, yet.
I love steampunk. It gives writers and readers the ability to suspend belief and just enjoy the adventure. That said this writer is trying to bridge the gap between science fiction and steampunk. A worthy goal, but failes completely at the science part of science fiction, forgoes all known extraterrestral science and just makes things up on both sides of the coin. I found the steampunk world in this story compelling, and fun, but was completely aghast at the lack of basic science in the rest of it. Give me a world untethered to reality or give me a world based on at least a basic understanding of reality.
The author takes a new approach to an old plot line, and does a fairly good job at keeping his basic science intact at least from the laymans point of view. With only the premise compelling you to suspend belief. I'm a firm supporter of this way of writing science fiction, so I deem this readable. The Narrator, is not a voice actor, and pronounces didn't as dident, over and over again, but those are nitpicks. He does an affordable job of telling the story and after you've gone through all the really great books, this is a decent secondary read. I'm not going to say it was bad. Actually, I listened to both books, so far and enjoyed them. I'll most definitely listen to the third.
And by that I mean both of them, Mark Tufo "and" Sean Runnette. Now if your like me you despise cliff hangar ending. If that is so you would be sincerely missing out if you decided to not read/listen to this series. (with the one exception of the book of nothing but flash backs and diatribe(it was like listening to an entire old folks home worth of stories that led nowhere and made you wonder how long it was going to take)). Outside of that, I love this guys stuff.. no I don't mean his "stuff" I mean his writing. So anyway imagine that the entire world is burning around you and you still have plenty of wherewithal to find within yourself to make fun of everyone and everything around you while still clinging to life and holding on to the best parts of who you are. That is what this stuff is about. Thanks Mark, and Sean great job again!
I'm writing this after having listened to the entire trilogy. These are well thought out books, with a lot of plot twists that culminate in an ending that will not be what you expect, but is in no way anticlimactic. If you are looking for a scifi zombie book that is nothing like the others, and if you love mystery and action then this book is very much for you
Brandon Sanderson breaks ground moving away from his fantasy (middle earth) style novels and starts off running. I don't know of many writers with as fully rounded and well developed characters as Brandon creates. I can't wait for the next installment of this series.
Where to begin. Well at first I thought it was just the terrible narration, but soon realized that the story was equally bad. The narrator over emphasized everything in storm of bad acting. The author jumps all over the place in a vain attempt to tell a story that you quickly realize he was probably just making up as he went along. With no solid storyline and characters that will make your eyes roll back in your head in disbelief this book quickly topped my list as the worst in my collection. Think Plan nine from outer space bad.. It's that bad.
I take back every bad thing I said about the last book.. Mark Tufo comes into his own with this book. Fast paced, funny full of witty insights clever dialog. One of the things I truly love about Tufo is his amazing human insight, the ability to tell a story as if it came froma a real human, and not some made up character in the authors mind. I was a little worried when the last book ended up being nothing but inner dialog.. but this book was so well done that I can't say enough good things about it. Brilliant!
This is like the classic space stuff I grew up with. I love the the way the author leaves just enough unknown to make you wonder what he has up his sleeve next. I'm not sure the author is necessarily up to date on all tech, but that is forgiveable. The story if fun and moves along at a brisk pace.
However the narrator does not. The narrator is depressed, along with an entire cast of characters. He does the character voices well.. even if they are all depressed. My theory is that the narrator actually wanted to do self hypnosis, but got stuck with this instead. Almost every single sentence drops in pace and volume at the end, as if he is trying to put you to sleep, or perhaps he really is depressed. I don't know but either way it detracts from the action of this book severely, as it's difficult to feel the tension through the depression.
Amazing story, well written.. I cannot recommend this enough for scifi lovers.. Listen to the first two books.. after which you will be unable to stop listening to this. I wanted more.
I listened to all three, because I am a space junkie and because I wanted to give the series a chance.
The truth is I rolled my eyes and shook my head so often that I wasn't sure if I was missing some big joke. John Ringo (I doubt that's his real name) deftly ignores logic and understanding to bring you his fantasy of a world that could never happen and is so ill conceived that I'm quite sure most 7th graders could point out at least one logic hole in every chapter. He takes the most ridiculous and simple minded answers to every plot problem and then ties them together in ways that make me shake my head and turns my mind numb.
If you are easily amused, and or can simply throw away most or all of your intellect long enough to choke down this series then good for you.
PS. Mark Boyett is by far one of the most talented voice actors creating audible books.
