At last, one of the world’s greatest works of science fiction is available - just as author Stanislaw Lem intended it. To mark the 50th anniversary of the publication of Solaris, Audible, in cooperation with the Lem Estate, has commissioned a brand-new translation - complete for the first time, and the first ever directly from the original Polish to English. Beautifully narrated by Alessandro Juliani (Battlestar Galactica), Lem’s provocative novel comes alive for a new generation.

Being that this is a translation from Polish (Lem's native language), this is an excellent read/listen. Definitely worth the credit!

Linda McKinney is a myrmecologist, a scientist who studies the social structure of ants. Her academic career has left her entirely unprepared for the day her sophisticated research is conscripted by unknown forces to help run an unmanned - and thanks to her research, automated - drone army. Odin is the secretive Special Ops soldier with a unique insight into the faceless enemy who has begun to attack the American homeland with drones programmed to seek, identify, and execute targets.

Madeleine says: "What's that droning sound?"

If you have read Daemon and Freedom(TM) - or even if you haven't - you are going to love this book. Everything he has come up with is plausible and believable, to the point that I keep looking over my shoulder for these things!

  • Year Zero: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 53 mins)

    • Narrated By John Hodgman

    Story

Low-level entertainment lawyer Nick Carter thinks it's a prank, not an alien encounter, when a redheaded mullah and a curvaceous nun show up at his office. But Frampton and Carly are highly advanced (if bumbling) extraterrestrials. And boy, do they have news. The entire cosmos, they tell him, has been hopelessly hooked on humanity's music ever since "Year Zero" (1977 to us), when American pop songs first reached alien ears. This addiction has driven a vast intergalactic society to commit the biggest copyright violation since the Big Bang.

Robert says: "Fantastic Performance by Hodgman"
    "Copyright Mathematics meets Star Wars"

If you haven't seen Rob Reid's TED talk on Copyright Mathematics it might take a while to understand the tone of this book. John Hodgman was a great choice to read this, his flat humorous tone drives the story from funny to downright hilarious!

The Authors didn't get too carried away with advances in tech, it was easy to believe that we could be seeing this in a few decades. It was fantastic listening to the familiar voices from Battlestar Galactica tell these stories.
