  • Children of the Mind

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 24 mins)
    • By Orson Scott Card
    • Narrated By Gabrielle de Cuir, John Rubinstein

The planet Lusitania is home to three sentient species: a large colony of humans; the Pequeninos; and the Hive Queen, who was brought there by Ender Wiggin. Once again, the enemy (the Starways Congress) has gathered a fleet and is threatening to destroy Lusitania. Ender's oldest friend, Jane, an evolved computer intelligence, is trying to save the three sentient species of Lusitania, but the Starways Congress is destroying the computer world she lives in.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The story was really missing the number of big ideas I've come to expect from Card. It needs more plot twists, less character bickering, and more big sci fi ideas.

What was most disappointing about Orson Scott Card’s story?

When Ender went "outside" and created other characters out of thin air, the Enderverse jumped the shark. That was THE moment. Unfortunately this book was entirely on the wrong side of that shark.
Nevertheless, for fans such as myself, we're going to read it anyway. Card knows that and keeps putting out more novels in this series, with less profound content. Oh well. See you on the next one.

What does Gabrielle de Cuir and John Rubinstein bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Yes. I've read this book twice and listened the the audiobook twice. Audiobook is better for sure. Gabrielle de Cuir is an unforgettable hive queen.

What character would you cut from Children of the Mind?

Quara is not a credible character, too flat. Also, the god whisperers can go

  • The Company We Keep: A Husband-and-Wife True-Life Spy Story

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 34 mins)
    • By Dayna Baer, Robert Baer
    • Narrated By Robert Baer, Dayna Baer, Richard McGonagle
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Robert Baer was known inside the CIA as perhaps the best operative working the Middle East. Dana was originally tasked for Agency background checks, but always wanted more. When Bob and Dayna met on a mission in Sarajevo, it wasn’t love at first sight. But there was something there, a spark. And as the danger escalated and their affection for each other grew, they realized it was time to leave “the Company,” to somehow rediscover the people they’d once been. As worldly as they both were, the couple didn’t realize at first that turning in their Agency ID cards would not be enough to put their covert past behind.

    "Incredibly boring"

Many times the authors tells the reader that working for the CIA's clandestine service is actually rather mundane. They prove it in this book. Very boring from start to finish. These tales might be interesting if they were told to you by a friend. But I expected much more from a best-seller.
