Charles Martin is a good writer but I could have condensed this book by about half. In fact I skipped over probably 2/3 of this book. I enjoyed his other book Chasing Fireflies much more than this. It's hard to stay interested when you basically only have 2 characters in the same setting the entire time. I wanted to like it more but I just couldn't get into it.
What a great book! Not only is her story inspirational but her writing is excellent. I very much enjoyed this narrator and felt as if it were Corrie reading it herself. This is a must read!
I first read Chasing Fireflies and enjoyed it, especially the ending. I then read Mountain Between us and it was so slow that I skipped past half the book. I thought I'd give him another chance with this one but sad to say I was disappointed again. It's just very slow and predictable. Just finished listening to The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom and enjoyed it very much.
It was a cheerful, love filled, light read after reading The Shack. I love her blog, show and now her book!
When I first started I was thinking, OK this is going to be a well written book and although it was well written, it was just too jam packed with theology that overrode the storyline. Every time the main character asks a questions, be prepared for a several page answer from "God" that will load you down with more info that you can at times make sense of. There were parts that were enlightening but all in all just too far out for me.
I'm not sure what all the hype is about. This wasn't a terrible book but after reading The Help and A Thousand Splendid Suns, this just wasn't up to par. Not a bad read but you can tell it is geared toward a younger audience. I passed it on to my 12 year old and she is enjoying it. The narrater sounds like the one reading my 1st grader's Magic Tree House books. Again, she wasn't terrible but sounded juvenile to me. Maybe a different narrater would have helped this book.
I was hoping to broaden my horizons by reading some of the old classics. This one was a mistake! Terrible plot, terrible ending, and profane language throughout the entire book. Stick with To Kill a Mockingbird. This was the biggest waste of 3 hours ever!
Once again Khaled Hosseini impresses me with his impeccable ability to take you there with his writing. As with The Kite Runner, it is a very sad story but if you're willing to step out and experience what was likely the reality of many women of this time, then this is the book to read. Atossa Leoni does an excellent job narrating. I would recommend this book and hope to see this authors name again soon!
I really enjoyed this story and the narrator did a good job. You can tell that it is written by a man though because of the little bit of rambling about sports a couple of times. The great surprise ending made up for any long windedness though. The characters are lovable and I enjoy Charles Martin's prose. The only think that would have made this book better for me was if there had been a little romance or love connection, but that's just because I'm a sap. I would recommend it, in fact I just downloaded another of Martin's books The Mountain Between Us with hopes that it is just as good.
It might have enjoyed this book more had I read it as opposed to listening to it.I really did not enjoy the "brittish" narrator at all. The story line is a slow starter and truthfully, I finally just ended up putting it down. Too bad!
