The history of early england is written well and sounds like a story rather than a history lesson.
It would be nice if someone re-wrote it in a more modern style,
Quite good though, Churchill has an impressive historic knowledge
The narrator is the author, he speaks directly and his passion for Chinese history is glaringly obvious. The author goes into such detail and uses language so well that you have no difficulty imagining the scenes and events he describes.
This is multiplied by just how interesting Chinese history is and how well this time period is recorded.
I found the time period of the late 1800's to early 1900's to be very interesting, the dowager empress was such a b***. It was cool to see China has conservative obstructions on both sides of the spectrum just as the west does.
Then the dramatic transformation with the ending of the empire and the birth of the republic and following civil wars gave birth to a modern entity that is not entirely different to those in the west.
10/10 enough said.
Definitely some laughs, I felt sorry for many characters, the Lao Beijing most of all during the cultural revolution. The most important thing that this book made me feel is a unity or commonality to a people who used to seem alien to me.
As someone who has never visited China, I now see that they are just like us at the core.
Stalin was a bastard, even to Mao.
It was such a well written story and so well performed by Roy Ditrice, he returned to his A game after some of the middle books.
I really didn't want this book to end.
The plot twists and surprises, the characters and language used to illustrate the world were all just amazing.
This one was probably his best, I could not fault it.
I don't want to spoil it but I will hint to the surprise at the wall near the end left me stunned.
George R.R Martin, you are amazing. Roy Dotrice is also amazing, this series has just been the best fiction I have ever read (listened to).
Yes, I could never sit there and read through 56 hours.
Winston Churchill obviously.
No, but he is a fantastic narrator, he does accents and everything.
Not that sort of book, the whole thing was a great eye opener into high level politics.
You certainly get your moneys worth with this one.
Yes, obviously I can't read while driving to work.
He reads in an interested, engaged and clear to understand manner.
It made me think, think and realize things that have been going on all around my my whole life and I didn't realize.
I will listen to this one a few more time I think.
This was a great story, realistic and sticks it to the system!
