The final book of Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove tetralogy is an exhilarating tale of legend and heroism. Captain Woodrow Call, August McCrae's old partner, is now a bounty hunter hired to track down a brutal young Mexican bandit. Riding with Call are an Eastern city slicker, a witless deputy, and one of the last members of the Hat Creek outfit, Pea Eye Parker, now married to Lorena -- once Gus McCrae's sweetheart. This long chase leads them across the last wild streches of the West....

Could he read any slower?? I am a big Larry McMurtry fan but after trying to listen for a few hours I had to delete this book because, aside from the story going nowhere, the reader was driving me crazy. I even increased the speed on my iPod but it didn't help. At the risk of sounding mean, I will avoid any other books narrated by this reader.

Two lonely towns in Colorado: Hope and Despair. Between them, 12 miles of empty road. Jack Reacher never turns back. It's not in his nature. All he wants is a cup of coffee. What he gets is big trouble. So in Lee Child's electrifying new novel, Reacher - a man with no fear, no illusions, and nothing to lose - goes to war against a town that not only wants him gone, it wants him dead.

What did you love best about Nothing to Lose?

I'm still listening but want to give an early review just to say I've tried listening to Dick Hill read in the past and could not get through the book. There is little inflection in the voices of different situations or characters - he is just boring to listen to. I will update this review if I can actually get through this book but I will certainly not download another one read by him.

Would you be willing to try another one of Dick Hill’s performances?

    Absolutely not

    Any additional comments?

I only tried this reader again because I wanted to listen to a Jack Reacher story but it just isn't worth the torture - sorry Dick Hill. Maybe you can put more feeling into your future readings

Four people in a car, hoping to make Chicago by morning. An hour behind them, a man lies stabbed to death in an old pumping station. He was seen going in with two others, but he never came out. He has been executed, the knife work professional, the killers vanished. Within minutes, the police are notified. Within hours, the FBI descends, laying claim to the victim without ever saying who he was or why he was there. All Reacher wanted was a ride to Virginia. All he did was stick out his thumb. But he soon discovers he has hitched more than a ride.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Dick Hill really should reconsider how he reads a story - I even tried speeding up the tape but it didn't help. It was torture and I had to give it up after a couple of hours. I'm sorry I couldn't rate the story section more than one star (I would have preferred to leave it blank) as it isn't fair to judge the story if I can't listen to it but this program would not allow me to write a review without at least giving one star.

What could Lee Child have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Get a different person to read his books

How could the performance have been better?

    Get a different performer

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I wish I could have listened to enough of it to make a judgement

Everything starts somewhere. For elite military cop Jack Reacher, that somewhere was Carter Crossing, Mississippi, way back in 1997. A young woman is dead, and solid evidence points to a soldier at a nearby military base. But that soldier has powerful friends in Washington. Reacher is ordered undercover - to find out everything he can, to control the local police, and then to vanish. Reacher is a good soldier. But when he gets to Carter Crossing, he finds layers no one saw coming, and the investigation spins out of control. Local sheriff Elizabeth Deveraux has a thirst for justice - and an appetite for secrets.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Someone who takes a VERY long time to comprehend words

What could Lee Child have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

    Hire a different reader

What didn’t you like about Dick Hill’s performance?

I've never listened to such a slow reader - I thought I had the setting on 1/2 speed. I could not even get through the 1st chapter without wanting to pull my hair out.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I wish I could have gotten far enough into the book to give an opinion

    Any additional comments?

I do not wish to insult Dick Hill but please ask him to read like a normal person and not in slow motion. I feel like I wasted one of my monthly choices as there is no way I can listen to this book.

Sam Acquillo is at the end of the line: he's a middle-aged corporate dropout living in a ramshackle cottage in Southampton's North Sea. But then the old lady next door ends up floating dead in her bathtub, and it seems that Sam is the only one who wonders why.

I couldn't get through this book - not because of the story but because the reader was making me crazy. Could he read any slower? When I saw the 4 star rating I didn't want to give up but even after speeding up my ipod I still found him so annoying that after about 3 hours I finally deleted the book. Maybe I'll try the hardcopy.
