sounds great as an audiobook. The narrator is excellent. One can easily distinguish the characters and the book is even funnier read aloud. Cotillion is Heyer's best book because its hero is totally unlike her standard, rather annoying, heroes. And the Regency slang is great. The book starts a little slowly but hang in for the first couple of chapters. You'll be glad you did.
These radio plays are good mysteries but Bill Nighy as Charles Paris makes them great. He is witty, unbearable, sexy, hilarious, and mostly drunk. Suzanne Glover as his long suffering wife Frances is absolutely perfect. It's easy to see why they achieved 35 years of "divorce avoidance." They have great vocal chemistry. The rock and roll sound tracks are a big plus. More, please.
This audiobook is funny. The narrator seemed to really enjoy himself and so did I. I haven't heard of most of the detectives and I wouldn't want to read any of the books, but you don't have to be a fan of trashy detective stories to get a kick out of this audiobook. Of course, if you are, well, so much the better.
I tried to like this book. Unlike some others, I thought the narrator was fine and I liked the "where are they now?" beginning. But Elizabeth and Darcy weren't much like Austen's characters, there wasn't enough dialogue, and the murder mystery was pretty bad. Jane and Mr. Bingley were better and some of the minor characters were good, especially Mr. Bennett and Lydia. But without a successful Elizabeth & Darcy or a good murder mystery, why bother?
This is a great true crime book and is very effective as an audiobook. Although not unbearably scary, I found it very creepy. The murders are gruesome and Manson and the family members are truly frightening. The narration of the investigation and the trial are very detailed and fascinating. I agree with most of the other reviewers that Scott Brick does a very good job. Though long, the book never drags. Simon Vance is my favorite narrator, but Scott Brick is a close second. Highly recommended.
with the other reviewers that is a very good audiobook. I was a little worried that I wouldn't like it because of the prologue but once the Ripper murders started I could barely turn it off. The story is effectively creepy but not especially gory or violent. Simon Vance is a great narrator.
I have always loved the 1940's movie of Laura with Gene Tierney and Dana Andrews and several years ago it prompted me to read the original novel, which is a bit dated but still quite a good read. This is a very creditable audio version. The novel is told from several different points of view and it works well with the multiple readers. My only small criticisms are that Laura's voice is a bit more girlish than the one I hear in my head when I read the novel and Shelby didn't have any trace of a Southern accent. But Waldo Lydecker and Mark McPherson are perfect. I recommend this. I'm already on my second listen.
but still a lot of fun to listen to. Emilia Fox is an excellent narrator. The book is a bit too long and the plot is completely unbelievable but several of the characters are good. I especially liked how Christie treats the relationship between Bobby and his father. Although clearly meant to be amusing, it seemed a pretty good depiction of two family members who love each other but can't communicate.
this book is interesting and fun. The narrator is excellent. He has just the right tone for the material. I had never heard of Montague but it seems likely that Kevin Costner's character in Tin Cup is based on him.
I don't know much about pre-Castro Havana or the Cuban Revolution, but I thought this was a good introduction. The description of the gangsters and their relationships to the Batista regime were very detailed. It is clear that the author interviewed several people who were eye witnesses, including Meyer Lansky's driver. They seem to feel some nostalgia for the era. I imagine the depiction of the revolution will not please everyone since it is rather sympathetic but I thought it was very interesting. The narration was well-done.
