Turning into one of my favourite authors, I liked this. Just the right length to listen to on a car or train journey. Really liking this series,
Love the series and this audio version does justice to the novel. If you have only seen the TV series then you are in for a treat. The characters are stronger, action more frequent, blood is gorier, and bad guys are badder .... you get the picture.
Really impressed with everything about this book. Cynical lawyer (obsessed with money) and family problems, defending obviously guilty clients, this could have developed into an extended cliche. I kept thinking I had worked out the next twist and turn, had it partially confirmed and then something unexpected (but believable) leapt into the picture. The narrator does a great job with the various characters - especially good at conveying the mood of aggressive cops and making the lead character sympathetic. I almost wished I had studied Law rather than Chemistry and later teaching.... almost, but not quite. I'll buy the next in the series - not something I often do,
I hadn't read this book for over 20 years and ordered it, expecting to be disappointed. Often the "classics" of yesteryear fail to impress on later readings. This is an exception. It sets the standard for all works featuring the cyclical way that civilizations rise fall and rise again scenarios (see Toynbee). Some humour (not easy in SciFi), some pathos but basically a great story (novel at the time, not so now), good characterisations and a large dollop of cynicism. The narrator does a great job of making the characters come alive and is not afraid to "ham it up" a bit in order to help us get an insight into the character. Thank you for doing a wonderful version of this book.
I'm probably not the best person to review this book as I don't usually read this genre. Thought I'd give it a chance as I have enjoyed other works by this author. Although there were some interesting twists, generally it was a pretty forgettable plot. The narrator did a reasonably competent job but there was not enough differentiation between the characters.
The premise of a mute, artistic safe-cracking teenager didn't initially attract. However, this is a terrific crime novel. The author (and narrator) make it believable. Although some of the plot is telegraphed (due to the timeline approach), there is real suspense and I really felt for the lead character. Loved it and will explore this writer further.
This book contains more characters from the Discworld than any previous Pratchett book. As well as the usual favourites, the goblins feature well and a few personalities just glimpsed in earlier novels are fleshed out. Less of the cryptic humour and more storyline. I tried very hard to get into the last two non-Discworld books and had to give up. This is a welcome return.
When I started this, it seemed a run of the mill story about a 'rogue" detective. It gradually developed into much more than this. Good characterisation and a reasonable (if predictable) plot kept my interest. Would probably read more of the series.
I read the first in this series and it was good"classic" Holmes with a twist. This is by no means a bad story, just a bit away from the expected Holmes. It was much more in the vein of "Boys own stories", Bulldog Drummond or even "The thirty nine steps."
Must admit I wouldn't have bought it at full price. The blurb didn't appeal, so when I listened I was very pleasantly surprised. Not as focussed on violence and aliens and I expected. Good plot and characterisation kept my attention and I bought the first book in te series as a result.
Read the book a while ago and forgot about it. Saw the audiobook and bought it. Wasn't disappointed. The spoken version made more sense. Never been very keen on time travel stories (with the exception of Heinlein's "Door into summer".), but this is well written and the assumptions consistent.
