On a rainy November day, police detectives Pia Kirchhoff and Oliver von Bodenstein are summoned to a mysterious traffic accident: a woman has fallen from a pedestrian bridge onto a car driving underneath. According to a witness, the woman may have been pushed. The investigation leads Pia and Oliver to a small village, and the home of the victim, Rita Cramer. On a September evening eleven years earlier, two seventeen-year-old girls vanished from the village without a trace.

Like other reviewers, I felt that the translation from German must have left some of the nuances of the writing on the cutting room floor. Consequently, the language seemed stilted at times. That said, it was an interesting diversion, with many characters and personalities - and a story that moves forward at a quick pace. The character count was a challenge for any narrator and Mr. Fass did an admirable job.

Michael Robotham's Suspect, hailed as "a lightning-paced debut" by Entertainment Weekly, was an international best seller that raised the bar for thrillers. Now two characters from that acclaimed novel, Detective Vincent Ruiz and psychologist Joe O'Loughlin, return for the electrifying Lost. When Detective Ruiz is pulled from the Thames, he has a bullet in his leg, a photograph of a missing (and presumed dead) girl in his pocket, and absolutely no memory of what happened.

Good story - I was kept guessing as to the ultimate conclusion. The twists and turns did not seem contrived and there was no violence that was over-the-top. But the best part of the book was the reader. This is the first novel I've read by Michael Robotham and I was very disappointed to see that Ray Lonnen doesn't read any of the others. He is top notch!

Everything starts somewhere. For elite military cop Jack Reacher, that somewhere was Carter Crossing, Mississippi, way back in 1997. A young woman is dead, and solid evidence points to a soldier at a nearby military base. But that soldier has powerful friends in Washington. Reacher is ordered undercover - to find out everything he can, to control the local police, and then to vanish. Reacher is a good soldier. But when he gets to Carter Crossing, he finds layers no one saw coming, and the investigation spins out of control. Local sheriff Elizabeth Deveraux has a thirst for justice - and an appetite for secrets.

    Story

I stumbled upon a Jack Reacher story last year and found that the writing took me smack into someone else's world. A world that's a little bit uneasy, but you go along for the ride anyway. This one held my attention right to the end; the Reacher character really pulls you onto his side (a hero with a thought process comprised of strategy, nobility and loads of arcane information). A tale of morality, loyalty and daring - with big crescendos and just enough tension.

I'm not in love with Dick Hill's female voices, but all in all, a stellar performance.
