Late one night, exploring her father's library, a young woman finds an ancient book and a cache of yellowing letters. The letters are all addressed to "My dear and unfortunate successor", and they plunge her into a world she never dreamed of: a labyrinth where the secrets of her father's past and her mother's mysterious fate connect to an inconceivable evil hidden in the depths of history.

John S. Atherton says: "I give the book a five but I won't buy it..."
    "disappointing"
    Overall

started with high expectations but found it harder and harder to continue listening. i kept looking for more. even for a horror fantansy, it was still full of holes and low suspense and the feeling of a very weak plot. great relief when it was finished.

A twisted tale indeed, featuring love lost, alluring demons, idiotic servants, beautiful ladies, magicians, spells, pirates, and duels, Stolen from Gypsies has been called a comedic tour de force comparable to Shakespeare.

    Thomas says: "hilarious"
    "a high level of wit"
    Overall

This will not appeal to the beer and footballer mentality, but to a higher intellect. The story is full of laugh out loud wit and suttle humour, brought to life and given more substance by Frederick’s brilliant narration.

Magdalene la Batarde is the madam of the Old Priory Guesthouse in Southwark. She and her women are expected to engage in a number of sinful activities, but bloody murder isn't one of them until Baldassare, the messenger, dies. Though Baldassare isn't a regular client of the Old Priory Guesthouse, Magdalene and her women refuse to allow his death to go unavenged. Of course, their efforts aren't completely altruistic.

    Jim says: "Delightful"
    "whores & heros"
    Overall

medieval england is alive with intrigue, emotion and the not so everyday trials and tribulations of life in a whorehouse. it's easy to find a kinship with these characters whose lives are so distant in time, but similar in the need to survive.
