The authors devoted five decades to the study of world history and philosophy, culminating in the masterful 11-volume Story of Civilization. In this compact summation of their work, Will and Ariel Durant share the vital and profound lessons of our collective past. Their perspective, gained after a lifetime of thinking and writing about the history of humankind, is an invaluable resource for us today.

    "Disappointing"
    Overall

I was disappointed in this book. While the Durants gave a broad overview of what they thought were the lessons of history, I found most of their insights fairly superficial. There was a horrible whinning music between each chapter which I found extremely irritating. It was also hard to understand Will Durant when he spoke and it was even more difficult to understand Ariel Durant, especially when she was interrupting her husband.

The chapters themselves were fairly good and gave some good, broad historical perspectives, which made the book somewhat wothwhile,

The Spandau Diary -- what was in it? Why did the secret intelligence agencies of every major power want it? Why was a brave and beautiful woman kidnapped to get it? Why did a chain of deception and violent death lash out across the globe, from survivors of the Nazi past to warriors in this new conflict about to explode? Why did the world's entire history of World War II have to be rewritten as the future hung over a nightmare abyss?

What did you like best about this story?

The plot was complex and involved a great many characters and subplots. The Author was very creative and was able to weave this complex story into a cohesive plot. There was significant action and suspense up to the very end and the fact that the author wove actual history events into the story made it even more interesting. I listen to audiobooks when I work out and this book was so gripping that I looked forward to working out so I could listen and it made my workout much more enjoyable.

    Any additional comments?

    I highly recommend this book.

Jack Ryan has only just moved back into the Oval Office when he is faced with a new international threat. An aborted coup in the People's Republic of China has left President Wei Zhen Lin with no choice but to agree with the expansionist policies of General Su Ke Quiang. They have declared the South China Sea a protectorate and are planning an invasion of Taiwan. The Ryan administration is determined to thwart China’s ambitions, but the stakes are dangerously high as a new breed of powerful Chinese anti-ship missiles endanger the US Navy's plans to protect the island.

I really enjoyed this book. It was full of plots and subplots and always held my interest. Despite the complexity of the story it was easy to follow and was plausible (although plausibility was stretched a bit near the end). I listened to this book while I was working out and it made my workouts go faster as I was always anxious to see what was going to happen. I though this book was a real bargain.

I am generally open to alternative and enlightening viewpoints. This book, however, was a horror. It was repititious and pretentious. The authors attempted to legitimize their viewpoints by using bigger words and making their narrative more complicated rather than expressing themselves clearly and simply. It seemed like it was written by a pair of high school dropouts trying to sound like college professors. The authors also seem to fancy themselves as some sort of prophets. This book was terrible stuff and I could not slog through more than a few chapters. It is a waste of credits.
