The Mote In God's Eye is their acknowledged masterpiece, an epic novel of mankind's first encounter with alien life that transcends the genre. No lesser an authority than Robert A. Heinlein called it "possibly the finest science fiction novel I have ever read".

    Overall

As some other readers have mentioned, the narration is really mediocre. However, aside from that, I truly do not understand why people love this book so much. The chracters feel so uninteresting and incomplete and one-dimensional. I just finished it and am sure by tomorrow would be hard pressed to describe any of the characters - they are that forgetably blah...And the plot just drags along forever - even the action points were dull as dishwater, partly because I couldn't care less about the characters or the stupid story that is supposed to support the action and make the action exciting, but really doesn't succeed. And the big revelation of what the problem is with these aliens was such an anti-climax. When it was revealed I thought "What? So? That is it? Who cares??? Not that clever an idea... and I had to listen to all that over this lame idea???" It simply isn't enough of clever or original or in any way intriguing orsurprising idea to base a book on to begin with. On top of that the book isn't terribly well-developed or well-written. I tried to read this in paperback, because a friend gve me all the books by this author, knowing I like science fiction, and couldn't make it through - so I thought perhaps I'd be more entertained by the audio version... But a bad story is just a bad story, no matter what the format.

I know many will disagree, but honestly I just don't see how this is interesting, and no other reviewer here has justified it in my opinion. I am sorry I bothered with it. It truly is very over-rated in my opinion.
