Smiley's adversary is Karla, the Soviet officer who masterminded the Circus's ruin. His battleground is Hong Kong and his choice of weapons is the Honourable Gerald Westerby. A brand new Radio 4 full cast dramatisation of the classic George Smiley novel by John le Carre, starring Simon Russell Beale. "Regime change" did not begin with the administration of George W. Bush, but has been an integral part of U.S. foreign policy for more than one hundred years. Starting with the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy in 1893 and continuing through the Spanish-American War and the Cold War and into our own time, the United States has not hesitated to overthrow governments that stood in the way of its political and economic goals.

Kinzer's books should be must reading for all high school kids so they can understand where the previous leaders of our country went completely wrong. My 14 year old is reading them and going to drive his History teacher crazy.

Baron is clever - perhaps too clever. He sits on the heavily protected island of Cockaigne, a mini-Las Vegas forty miles out in the Gulf of Mexico, raking in as much as $250,000 some nights, laughing at the Outfit, who can’t collect their cut. Now the Outfit can no longer stand the loss of face - not to mention the loss of revenue. That’s why they’ve sent for Parker, who knows that the line between success and failure on this score would be exactly the length of the barrel of a .38.

    Jane says: "4 ½ stars."

But somehow the sweet heist of a college football game turns sour, Parker's woman is murdered, and the take is stolen. Now Parker's looking for the lowlife who did him dirty, while the cops are looking for seven clever thieves - and Parker must outrun them all. When hunters and hunted meet, some win, some lose….

Keller possesses all the qualities of a professional killer. He's cool, confident, reclusive, icy, and ruthlessly efficient. But this seasoned hit man is also prone to self-doubt as he finds himself caught in the clutches of a mid-life crisis.

I like Block's stuff. In this case I was very impressed with how I found myself relating to the main character and by the end of the book really rooting for him. The reader was tough though. The Hitman is a New Yorker and the reader delivers the narration in a "stereo-typical italian new yorker" voice. I actually have friends who talk this way and while it's kind of amusing it can also be kind of annoying. It's turned me off of other books. I stuck with this one though and was glad I did.

I read some negative reviews of this book in comparison to Shibumi but since I had never read Shibumi and was enjoying Winslow's other books I took a chance on it and enjoyed the hell out of this. I did go back and read Trevainian's after it and found I prefered Winslow's book much more. Hope he takes a crack at a sequel.
