This book is entirely different from the first novel ....it is unusual, it is sad...beautifully written.
Everything I would have said has already been written. A truly fine novel about a subject many of us can't know anything about because it is so alien to our upbringing. I thought the narration was incredible and I did not want it to end. Someone recommended it as "beach reading," I think the standard is much higher than beach reading. You will love these characters.
I understood that this novel had won an Edgar award - and they rarely let me down. I tried four times to get involved with this story and I never even finished the first part of the tape. It is very focused on hockey, too. That probably only annoyed me because I was so bored.
I felt that this plot was a bit far-fetched. I found myself saying, "come on, move along here." It's certainly better than average, but I was let down.
I just want to comment on another reviewer who didn't care for the narration. Don't let that stop you...I almost didn't buy this because a narrator can ruin a wonderful book. While I am not Irish, I thought this narrator was perfectly believable. I enjoyed his narration - does several different voices well.
The plot itself is well-rounded, there is a mystery, but there is also a good look at several characters who "live." Especially on of the sisters, Jackie. I only gave four stars because I reserve the five stars for a book that changes my life.
At the end of the first part of the three parts, I was mildly amused. As a young man, Beatty was quite a character. The author
says this about Beatty: he is vain, mean, holds up productions, spoiled, treats people badly, screws every woman he ever met, etc. I began to wonder why Beatty hadn't been shot. The author tediously goes through each movie Beatty has been involved with and discusses each of the behaviors mentioned above. Over and over and over. I was disappointed because I thought this was an authorized bio. It was not. It's really not too good. The sources are also very dated, but the author doesn't mention that so it sounds/reads as if these people quoted were recently interviewed. Don't spend your credits on this
