The castle looms dark against the light of the moon. Giant ravens circle in the sky. The wind whistles through the empty windows. Merlin the magician needs someone to find out what has happened. But who is brave enough to brush the cobwebs aside and go through the heavy doors? Who is smart enough to solve the mystery of how the castle became haunted and return it to its rightful owners? Merlin thinks he knows the answer to these questions.

My kids asked for Magic Lands (by Robert Stanek) and this is what I got by mistake. There are quite a few of these Magic Tree Houses. The books are short, about a boy and a girl named Jack and Annie who have a magic tree house. Cute kid stuff but not what my eight year old twins wanted.

    Overall

I love books that are well written and there are very few. Not only is this one well written, it is one of the better books I have listened to. The characters were great, the narration was great, the story incredible. I can't wait for the next one.

After the Great War that divided the peoples, the kingdoms of men plunged into a Dark Age that lasted 500 years. To heal the lands and restore the light, the great kings decreed that magic and all that is magical, be it creature, man, or device, shall be cleansed to dust. The cleansing raged for so long that no human could recall a time without it and it is in this time that the Dark Lord Sathar returned from the dark beyond.

This is an extremely engaging story, with an interesting weave of fantasy and mystery. Almost from the minute the story began, I was enthralled. I'm hooked and I've already listed twice to both novels.

Magic Lands: Journey Beyond the Beyond is a refreshingly unique fantastic adventure that is suitable for readers of all ages while containing all the icky-gooey-creepy details that are sure to delight! Following the village elder's advice, Ray leaves his home village, setting out for the place lost and deep where he will find a companion for his journey to the stone land and where he will discover that there is no easy path from childhood to manhood.

Robert Stanek's best (and best known) books undoutedly are his Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches. My teen loves them. When I saw this book was for younger readers, I just had to get it. The best thing about Magic Lands is the sense of excitement given to the book by the main character, Ray, and brought to life by this gifted author. My eight year old twins sat wide eyed through our entire reading. So I was delighted to find this on audio and have no doubt it will become their favorite story to listen to. I highly recommend it was 7 to 12 year olds and think older may enjoy it as well. I certainly enjoyed it.
