New York Times best-selling author Brandon Sanderson is widely celebrated for his Mistborn Trilogy and contribution to the final three books of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. In The Emperor's Soul, a Forger named Shai can copy and re-create any item by using magic to rewrite its history. After being condemned to death for attempting to steal the emperor's scepter, Shai is given one final chance. She' ll be allowed to live if she can create a new soul for the emperor, who hovers near death.

What made the experience of listening to The Emperor's Soul the most enjoyable?

The story had a lot of depth to it, despite being fairly short. Sanderson has really matured as an author (comparing to the first Mistborn book), and it's great to read almost anything by him.

What other book might you compare The Emperor's Soul to and why?

The book is pretty unique - but it did remind me a little of the Gentleman Bastard series by Scott Lynch - where they would create various personalities for use in their various schemes. In this story, this is done magically, but it had a slightly similar feel.

Jake Sullivan is a licensed private eye with a seriously hardboiled attitude. He also possesses raw magical talent and the ability to make objects in his vicinity light as a feather or as heavy as depleted uranium, all with a magical thought. It's no wonder the G-men turn to Jake when they need someoneto go after a suspected killer who has been knocking off banks in a magic-enhanced crime spree.

If you could sum up Hard Magic in three words, what would they be?

    Alternate History Fantasy

What other book might you compare Hard Magic to and why?

While the setting is different, I found a lot of parallels between this series and Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn series.

The way magic works in this book reminded me a little of the Mistborn system, and the main villain and the main female character also have a lot of similarities to those characters in Mistborn - though not enough that I'd say there was any copying going on :)

    Which scene was your favorite?

The ending - such plot twists! The author does such a marvelous job of foreshadowing but only giving you a little information so you are still not quite sure exactly what is going on - or even making you think something completely different is happening than what really is.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

yes, but without some pretty major spoilers it would be hard to explain :)

    Any additional comments?

The performance on this book is absolutely the best I have ever heard on Audible - period.

The honor previously went to the narration on the unabridged Timothy Zahn Star Wars Thrawn trilogy.

After some very precursory reading of reviews, I immediately bought books 2 and 3 of this series, and am working on book 2 currently, and loving it.

I grabbed this book when it was on sale and loved it. It has a similar feel as Scott Lynch's Gentlemen Bastard series. I definitely plan to listen to the second book!

This is a tale of sorrow, a tale of survival, a tale of one man's search for meaning in his universe, and how that search, and the indomitable will that drove it, gave birth to a legend.

Dubbed the American Tolkien by Time magazine, George R. R. Martin has earned international acclaim for his monumental cycle of epic fantasy. Now the number-one New York Times best-selling author delivers the fifth book in his spellbinding landmark series - as both familiar faces and surprising new forces vie for a foothold in a fragmented empire.

The wait for this book was long... we were delivered about 1/3 of it with A Feast for Crows, but the stories I most wanted to read are in this volume. Things are finally moving in the right direction.

As other reviewers have said, the choice of voicing for many characters - especially young and female characters isn't as good as it was in previous Martin books I bought from Audible - though some characters, such as Tyrion are perfect.

I enjoyed Zahn's Thrawn books immensely - this should be the canon - it's far superior to the Episodes 1 - 3 in it's imagination and scope.

Please bring out the rest of this series in unabridged format - I will buy them all, but I will not buy the currently offered abridged versions.
