Thirty-something Midwesterner Mark Fife believes he has successfully moved past the accidental death of his young son, Brendan, as well as his subsequent divorce from his college sweetheart, Chloe. He's successful, he's in love again, and he believes he's mastered his own memories. But then he is contacted by a strange woman who tells him not only that she owns his old house, but that she believes it to be haunted by Brendan's ghost.

Highly disappointed. This book just left me absolutely cold. Well, not absolutely cold – there’s enough heat from the disappointment in my wasted credit. Trite, unimaginative and just plain pathetic. The main character has absolutely no redeeming qualities all the way to the very end and the author makes the girlfriend out to be some pathetic woman just needing her baby’s daddy regardless of his worthless heart – and that is pretty much the summation of the entire book – a bunch of weak women and cheating, lying, conniving men. No – I’m not a man basher, not at all – I was rooting for him and hoping it was going to turn around but no, his very last action in his own words “another lie.”

Jill McCorkle’s first novel in 17 years is alive with the daily triumphs and challenges of the residents and staff of Pine Haven Estates, a retirement facility now home to a good many of Fulton, North Carolina’s older citizens. Among them, third-grade teacher Sadie Randolph, who has taught every child in town and believes we are all eight years old in our hearts; Stanley Stone, once Fulton’s most prominent lawyer, now feigning dementia to escape life with his son; Marge Walker, the town’s self-appointed conveyor of social status, and many more colorful characters.

Great concept for a book but this one is all over the place and it doesn't help at all that the reader does nothing for the characters. Perhaps if each character were given a distict voice to match their personalities it would be easier to follow all the jumping from person to person from the past to the present, etc.

    I can't reccomend.

The story begins in 1962. On a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline, a young innkeeper, chest-deep in daydreams, looks out over the incandescent waters of the Ligurian Sea and spies an apparition: a tall, thin woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat. She is an actress, he soon learns, an American starlet, and she is dying. And the story begins again today, half a world away, when an elderly Italian man shows up on a movie studio's back lot - searching for the mysterious woman he last saw at his hotel decades earlier.

What a wonderful book - but pay attention only to appreciate the intricate weaving from beginning to the very end! I can only imagine what the author's notes/outlines must have looked like hanging on the wall.

I will be looking at more books by this author AND the performer -what a wonderful job by them both!

I make the mistake of startking in the middle then had to go back and listen to the first and then skip to the end - I still LOVED IT. Very well thought out and very well written - happy I didn't blow it off since i'd messed up on the order in the beginning!!
Very worth the time and listen.

Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux knows she is the best - but she does not know if even she is good enough for this job. Hired by the dangerously beautiful archangel Raphael, a being so lethal that no mortal wants his attention, Elena knows failure is not an option---even if the task is impossible. Because this time, it's not a wayward vamp she has to track. It's an archangel gone bad.

The victim was buried alive in the Georgia woods, then killed in a horrifying fashion. When Sara Linton and Jeffrey Tolliver stumble upon the body, both become consumed with finding out who killed the pretty, impeccably dressed young woman. And for Sara and Jeffrey, a harrowing journey begins, one that will test their own turbulent relationship and draw dozens of lives into the case.

I like this series a lot but this narrator almost made me have to skip this one - this person had me hearing banjos all the way through and i just really didn't have these characters depicted as that "hokey" or back woods. Also - I'd be shocked if anyone were pleased with the anti-climatic ending after the horrible last fight scene..... just yuck. :(

In January 1945, in the waning months of World War II, a small group of people begin the longest journey of their lives: an attempt to cross the remnants of the Third Reich, from Warsaw to the Rhine if necessary, to reach the British and American lines.

Among the group is 18-year-old Anna Emmerich, the daughter of Prussian aristocrats. There is her lover, Callum Finella, a 21-year-old Scottish prisoner of war who was brought from the stalag to her family's farm as forced labour.

Very interesting material - I learned things I had no idea about - ie. Dresden. Once I learned of what happened at Dresden I HAD to go research it, I HAD NO IDEA the extent of damage or casualties. From this research I also learned this is where Slaughterhouse Five was conceived since KV was a POW and held in an actual slaughterhouse (which ultimately saved him.) Some is very hard to listen to - this entire autrocity is hard to concieve for me - hard to comprehend how humans can turn so vicious OR HOW MASSES of people can just roll over and ""obey"" This book gives a look from various perspectives - I highly recommend for those seeking/interested in the human spirit, life, war, love, family, courage, this time in our history - glimpses of our future?

Glorious is set against the backdrops of the Jim Crow South, the Harlem Renaissance, and the civil rights era. Blending the truth of American history with the fruits of Bernice L. McFadden's rich imagination, this is the story of Easter Venetta Bartlett, a fictional Harlem Renaissance writer whose tumultuous path to success, ruin, and revival offers a candid portrait of the American experience in all its beauty and cruelty.

If I could leave a negative star review I would.... This has got to be one of the worst written books I've ever had the displeasure of listening/reading. This book jumped from one character to another to another while killing off others - who knows why or what happened after or anything pertinent to the actual story!? Throw a couple of facts from the time period in, put in a horrid scene that yes, most likely did take place back then and then call it a book. What a waste of time and a credit - to say nothing of the angst it has caused me once it called itself "the end." Boo.

An innocent man is about to be executed. Only a guilty man can save him. Travis Boyette is such a man. In 1998, in the small East Texas city of Sloan, he abducted, raped, and strangled a popular high-school cheerleader. He buried her body so that it would never be found, then watched in amazement as police and prosecutors arrested and convicted Donté Drumm, a local football star, and marched him off to death row.

Extremely harsh story and Grisham does not hold back - this makes me wonder... who let him stand by their side to go through this experience? This book has ran the gamut with my emotions - highly recommended to you who can handle truth...

These adventures of a Victorian heroine are considered by some to still be shocking as Eveline explores her sexuality in a series of erotic encounters from a very young age. She has a veneer of propriety which heightens her casual sexual behaviour and provides a revealing insight into our perceptions of Victorian society. Talented actress Sally Farmiloe captures this dichotomy beautifully.
