"engrossing"
I could not put this down, to my husband's regret. Having never read Lee Smith before I went into this with hesitation. Her vehicle of story telling (documents) was ingenious. I found this to be a wonderful story with great character voices reading the material. And the music, all placed in appropriate areas, to be an welcomed and natural addition to the storyline.
Well Done Ms Smith.
"intrigue"
This is the first time I have read a book from this author. I was captivated and found this to be a fine book as an introduction. she has done some very good research into the Plain People dynamics.
"Battles"
As much as I enjoyed the first two volumes, this third was mired in battle scenes and lost me. I got confused as to who was fighting who. I know a 4th book is on the way and the interview with the author at the end of this book was helpful. But I am not sure besides the one big AH HA at the end if this volume was necessary.
"austin mystery"
This long drawn out tale had good bones. But wading through the wordy 1st person thought process was tiresome. Written in 18/19th century fashion this story is well constructed and true to the time. But not a gripping mystery.
"Creepy"
This felt too real. It gave me the creeps. That means it was written very well.
"good insight"
I really like the way this read. . . but I am afraid to watch the movie. Having a daughter that was a nanny in the boston area I can totally relate to the stories and struggles.
Good read
"great intrigue"
I didn't think I would like this very masculine subject but I did. It kept me guessing what was coming next. Good read.
"forced march"
Heavy, this tale is heavy with character building dialog and thought processes. I liked the idea of the story but there are too many pieces to keep track of. I did make it to the end and will read the next in the series, but I hope I find some tightening up of the story lines.
"simple"
Simply written, this tale of possible irish emmigration was charming. though you could guess the end the characters are what kept you going. I wish I could have sat on the bench next to molly and gazed upon the harbor asking how life has been so far.
"captivating"
I had never heard of this book or the play. What a surprise it has been. I really enjoyed the angle this was set at. long but good reading.
