Orphaned and subjected to cruelty at Lowood charity school, Jane nonetheless emerges unbroken in spirit and integrity. The story of how Jane becomes governess at Thornfield Hall, meets and loves Mr. Rochester, and discovers the impediment to their lawful marriage transcends melodrama to portray a woman's passionate search for a wider and richer life than that traditionally accorded to her by Victorian society.

This acclaimed best seller from popular historian Alison Weir is a fascinating look at the Tudor family dynasty and its most infamous ruler. The Six Wives of Henry VIII brings to life England’s oft-married monarch and the six wildly different but equally fascinating women who married him. Gripping from the first sentence to the last and loaded with fascinating details, Weir’s rich history is a perfect blend of scholarship and entertainment.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Six Wives of Henry VIII to be better than the print version?

audiobooks almost always work better for me, though this would be a great companion to the written version (I often have both)
I have been listening to many audio books about Henry the VIII lately, my favorite is the Autobiography of Henry the VIII, this book tells a very different story from the view point of his wives and those who knew them, this book is a great companion to the above mentioned book.
Alison Weir really does her homework.

    Any additional comments?

great narration and story, this author is exceptional.

Fifty years after her death, Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe still beguiles the world, her image enthralling millions. Many books have attempted to explain her allure and tell her story, but none has succeeded as well as this work by acclaimed biographer Donald Spoto. Spoto’s exhaustive research uncovers a conspiracy of silence, allowing him to present the facts, free from often-repeated myths and speculation. Granted access to more than thirty-five thousand pages of formerly sealed files containing letters, diaries, appointment books, and other intimate papers, he also interviewed nearly two hundred people who had never before spoken on record.

The New York Times best-selling author of The Six Wives of Henry VIII and The War of the Roses, historian Alison Weir crafts fascinating portraits of England’s infamous House of Tudor line. Here Weir focuses on Elizabeth I, also known as the Virgin Queen, who ascended to the throne at age 25 and never married, yet ruled for 44 years and steered England into its Golden Age.

i love audio to much to try the print version of anything with rare exceptions

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Life of Elizabeth I?

the differences between Elizabeth and Henry the VIII

What does Davina Porter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

i love davina porter, as a narrator she is ideal for british history.

    Any additional comments?

listen to the autobiography of henry the viii first and then listen to this one, if you are a history buff like i am you will love it.

  • The Grapes of Wrath

    • UNABRIDGED (21 hrs and 5 mins)

    Story
    (1125)

At once naturalistic epic, captivity narrative, road novel, and transcendental gospel, Steinbeck’s, The Grapes of Wrath is perhaps the most American of American classics. Although it follows the movement of thousands of men and women and the transformation of an entire nation during the Dust Bowl migration of the 1930s, The Grapes of Wrath is also the story of one Oklahoma farm family, the Joads, who are forced to travel west to the promised land of California.

Dan Harlow says: "Almost more relevant now than when it was written"
    "so far so good BUT"
    Overall

just purchased this today & have been listening for a few hours, the pace of the narrator is a little slower compared to what i am used but he is excellent for this story & voices are great, i have tried "reading" grapes of wrath many times but could never get through it.
    ;
the only draw back for this audio book is the startling harmonica music at the end of each chapter, it is so loud it shakes you out of the mood the narrator has created, i had to rush to turn down the volume & then turn it back up to hear the narrator again.
i would already have given this 5 stars but the music is just so annoying, i am listening to it on my kindle it may be better if i listen to it on my laptop when i can possibly have the volume spikes adjusted.

overall excellent for only 1 credit

  • Dangerous Liaisons

    • Narrated By Gabriel Woolf
    Overall

    Story
    (25)

The story, composed entirely of letters written by the various characters to each other, tells of the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont, two rivals who use sex as a weapon to humiliate and degrade others, uncaring of those who face social ruin or whose hearts are broken. It depicts a decadent and corrupt aristocracy exposing the perversions of the so-called Ancien Regime. The relevance of this grew due to the ensuing the French Revolution.

    Steve says: "Amazing story."
    "could be good"
    Overall

the preface was nearly impossible to understand sounding as if the narrator had swallowed the microphone, i am finding the the sound quality is not very good at all and i am glad i paid only about $2 for it

i feel that if the audio was cleaned up a bit the narrator would not be able to ruin the story so much
