yes - interesting enough
at times it nice to have a series of short stories that are interesting and sometimes humorous. when the long epic fantasies and other novels start to bog you down this is a great book to turn to. I enjoy reading about wildlife and animals.
i'd give a bit more detail on how the re-sleeving goes (maybe i missed it - felt it wasn't adequately explained - it's as if he brought it up and then jumped to it's logical conclusion to get on with the story).
maybe - not against it.
the pacing of the book seemed good. the characters weren't flat but they weren't appealing either. he seemed to jump over the science (pseudo-science) to get to the story.
the story left me not wanting more - relieved more by it's ending than the ending itself.
it had a bit of a pulp-fiction feel at times. there was nothing in the book that drove me to want to continue reading - nothing enticing or intriguing.
the narrator was excellent
this book has all the element of fantasy....carpet rides (large scale too), spells and incantations, sorcerer's etc. it plays a bit with some of the sorcerers and how they tease themselves but for me it didn't work in endearing me to their qualities or even comic relief.
the book is very gritty and shows a hard reality. the characters are gray in the sense that they are part of a military company yet are willing to go to ends to spare a child or to save one of their own.
you have to get used to the rhythm of the book. it's raw and choppy almost as if marching down the road to the end of the story. it can be very distracting. the plot drives the book too and the characterization almost yes almost leaves you short.
overall it was a solid 3.5
I enjoyed the story. it seems the plot kept me listening despite the lack of pause between characters and chapters. Seriously one moment your involved in a characters life and the next your trying to figure out how they got to the new environment or situation. there is no pause between chapters or sections of the chapters where the author takes up a different topic or character (another reviewer stated the same thing and it's true - drive you crazy). sometimes you can pick it up but other times not so much even though you know there is no pause and you're waiting for it - still catches you off guard.
the story was good - a little long and at times the description of events such as conflict scenes was slightly overdone. seems the author almost tried too hard to get in as much science as he could. it was a fine line between just enough science and too much as too hinder the pace of the action ( no one has mastered this as well as B. Sanderson - that guy can describe a fight scene!)
I usually listen intently but this book i found myself not listening as intently and letting it flow not worrying about every little detail as the author tends to lean to excessive description...but as I said it was a fine line and the author rode that ever so carefully and the plot kept you listening.....the only thing stopping me from listening the the second book is the lack of a pause between sections.
I would also say the book has a lot of characters and I dont feel the characterization was what kept me interested - it has characterization but not so much so that I necessarily felt anything for any of the characters. Maybe others would feel different - I am no expert - just my opinion.
The book is, of course, different than the movie - they always are. Blade Runner is a good book. The sci-fi is a bit weak and more of a vehicle for the plot. The depth of the characters was near superficial and the main character's self inquiry was surface level at best. Although the story line was active enough to keep me engaged throughout. Very enjoyable listen.
As for the narrator, he was decent except sometimes it seemed as if he used the same voice for several characters - I guess it shouldn't matter but a slightly different accent or something would have been nice.
the narrator did a great job - even keeping the accent between inter-planetary characters. Asimov as always delivers the sci-fi/detective story that keeps you interested and entertained - not too much detail to bore you just enough for the story.
