"an amzing jouney"
This is so well written and the narrator is fabulous. African accented English makes it all believable. If you want background on the problems of Sudan, this is the book for you.
"Spellbinding, history, adventure, romance"
I don't think I have ever given a 5 star review before. This is an amazing book, well written, and well read by the actor, Ron Perlman. It's about the seige of Lenningrad and two Soviet youths who go behind enemy lines to find a dozen eggs in exchange for not being shot by the Soviet army for desertion and looting. It has pathos, humor, a compelling story, and a glimpse of a time and a place so realistic, I got cold reading it. If you want a shorter book that will keep you listening, this is it.
"The worst book I ever listened to"
Pat, Banal, with cartoon characters. A big waste of time. Don't know why anyone liked it. There are so many other good books about the development of modern China. Don't waste your time.
"How Apartheid came to be and great characters"
If you had told me I would like a book with a significant amount of boxing it it, I would have said, "no way"
Absolutely first rate and real.
"Entrancing for a while; then you just want it ove"
Too long of a book. The characters were great, writing terrific, but by the end it just bogs down.
"Neither Good Nor Bad"
I had just returned from Shanghai so I wanted to read more about it. I felt I got a good picture of high society before the revolution. The immigrant experience, and its relentless racism is depicted well. The story was predictable, the ending abrupt, and the characters did not stick with me.
"Great story; poorly read"
Geraldine Brooks writes great stories that are well researched. The phony accents and the inability for the narrator to pronounce any Hebrew words correctly was annoying. It shouldn't take much effort on the producer's part to find someone to coach on pronunciation.
"delightful"
Loved the story, loved the accent and voice of the narrator. How little things have changed since the 17th century for many Moslem women
