Richard Henry Dana, a law student turned sailor for health reasons, sailed in 1834 aboard the brig Pilgrim on a voyage from Boston around Cape Horn to California. Drawing from his journals, Two Years Before the Mast gives a vivid and detailed account, shrewdly observed and beautifully described, of a common sailor's wretched treatment at sea, and of a way of life virtually unknown at that time.

This book really takes you back in time an teaches you the ways and lives of common sailors. Plus you get a rare look at California before it was fully settled. Exciting from start to finish. And its all real! Just an amazing work.

As a devastating hurricane approaches, as the benighted creations of Victor Helios begin to spin out of control, as New Orleans descends into chaos and the future of humanity hangs in the balance, the only hope rests with Victor's first, failed attempt to build the perfect human. Deucalion's centuries-old history began as the original manifestation of a soulless vision and it is fated to end in the ultimate confrontation between a damned creature and his mad creator.

The story itself was fantastic. Clearly Dean Koontz has brilliant story telling mind. BUT I think this book lacks adequate editing. There is far to much repetition with the same details written over and over. I am not sure if the author forgot he had described the same thing a chapter ago, or if he was deliberately "dumbing" things down to be sure dim readers did not forget a detail. In any case, the book could have been edited and probably reduced in size by 30%. Otherwise, a very enjoyable listen. Great ending too.

The time is 1933, the place, Berlin, when William E. Dodd becomes America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s Germany in a year that proved to be a turning point in history. A mild-mannered professor from Chicago, Dodd brings along his wife, son, and flamboyant daughter, Martha. At first Martha is entranced by the parties and pomp, and the handsome young men of the Third Reich with their infectious enthusiasm for restoring Germany to a position of world prominence. Enamored of the “New Germany,” she has one affair after another....

    Overall

What a fantastic book this ended up being! To step inside the world of the ambassador and his family and view the rise of Nazi power from their vantage point. The author makes it very clear that this is not meant to be a complete history of the 3rd Reich but rather a small snapshot of some events that were witnessed. I found it riveting. The narrator Stephen Hoye was one of the best I have heard so far. PERFECT for this sort of book.

One day in 1952, the strangled body of 10-year-old Cathy Lake is discovered in a public park. A homeless suspect, Albert Jay Smalls, is arrested and held for interrogation. Now, Officers Norman Cohen and Jack Pierce have only 24 hours to make the sullen young man talk before he's released. How far are they willing to push him to get a confession?

Excellent story. Excellent narration (maybe the best I have heard). Thomas Cook creates characters as vivid and exciting as Hemingway. George Guidall then brings them to life. I did not think one man could voice act so many characters at once!

Forced out of the Los Angeles Times amid the latest budget cuts, newspaperman Jack McEvoy decides to go out with a bang, using his final days at the paper to write the definitive murder story of his career. He focuses on Alonzo Winslow, a 16-year-old drug dealer in jail after confessing to a brutal murder. But as he delves into the story, Jack realizes that Winslow's so-called confession is bogus. The kid might actually be innocent.

This is a very well written suspense thriller. Michael Connelly has just nailed the formula and may have set the new standard, in my opinion. And he does it without excessive gore.

This book is fast paced and just a blast to listen to. It's one of those that you simply can't turn off sometimes. It can be compared to some of Greg Bear's great works; perhaps a lighter version of The Forge of God.

Fantastic story and well narrated! It has been awhile since I read the original, and now I realize that the movies somewhat diluted / ruined the adventure. I highly recommend this one.

  • The Gulag Archipelago: Volume I Section I: The Prison Industry, Perpetual Motion

In this masterpiece, Solzhenitsyn has orchestrated thousands of incidents and individual histories into one narrative of unflagging power and momentum. He combines history, autobiography, documentary and political analysis as it examines in its totality the Soviet apparatus of repression from its inception following the October Revolution of 1917. I think Americans have no idea just how bad things got in the USSR. I was shocked and enthralled, but never upset and never overwhelmed with gore. I cannot comprehend how one man could have collected and chronicled so much information and presented it so well. Bravo!

The artifact is found seven miles below the surface of the sea and beneath 40 more feet of sand. The Navy's efforts to raise a wrecked submarine uncover it - and set in motion a scientific race to retrieve it, to discover just what it is and where it came from. Denser than any substance known to man, it has broken every drill bit they've tried on it and will not budge an inch. It resists every effort to breach it - or communicate with it.

This ranks near the top of my list for well written and well read sci-fi's. It just keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. Lot's of fun.
