While cascading down a waterfall, her kayak became pinned at the bottom and she was immediately and completely submerged. Despite the rescue efforts of her companions, Mary was underwater for too long, and as a result, died. To Heaven and Back is Mary’s remarkable story of her life’s spiritual journey and what happened as she moved from life to death to eternal life, and back again.

In a single moment, everything changes. Seventeen year-old Mia has no memory of the accident; she can only recall riding along the snow-wet Oregon road with her family. Then, in a blink, she finds herself watching as her own damaged body is taken from the wreck.

Jennifer says: "Great story about life flashing before your eyes"
    "Excellent read"
    Overall

This book was very intense emotionally. I am a hospice nurse and this book captured some of what I believe occurs as someone struggles to stay or leave. With hospice patients the choice is not so much if as it is when. Still the struggle remains. I am considering it as a required read for my students.

In this fast-paced story, a treacherous path from Scarpetta's past merges with the high tech highway she now finds herself on. We travel back to the beginning of her professional career, when she enlisted in the Air Force to pay off her medical school debt and found herself ensnared in a gruesome case of what seemed to be vicious, racially motivated hate crimes against two Americans in South Africa.

Although there were times I felt I knew what was ready to occur, I had to keep reading! Great book for on the road as it kept my interest. Great book to get me back into Scarpetta novels.
