I loved this story. Caroline Fordyce lived with her two Aunts and wrote sensation novels for the Flying Intelligencer to support them all. She has changed her name to cover horrors from her former life and a great scandal, she does not move in tonish society. Mr. Adam Hardesty does move in society but also has secrets from a former life that he does not want anyone to know. Unbeknownst to Adam the woman across the hall kept a diary where she documented everything that went on in the building, this included information about his family and their former life. If this information became known it would do untold harm and hurt the members his family so he is trying to find it. The last information that he has is that Mrs. Fordyce had attended a seyance in a mediums home where the diary supposedly was and where the medium was killed. Adam comes knocking at Caroline's door to see if she is the blackmailer who is trying to hurt his family. She tells him she is innocent but he is not quite sure. Caroline is very taken with Adam and not in a good way and she thinks he has such a malevolent presence that he would be perfect to be the character for the villain in her new sensation novel.

Caroline tries to investigate on her own and she is thrown together with Mr. Hardesty but the blackmailer and killer try to set them up for murder and slander. How this all gets worked out is interesting and the secrets from both families past is heartrending, moving and very interesting.

I also would give this book 6 stars if I could. I've listened to it over and over. I thought Susan did a fantastic job with the voices especially little 5 yr old Alex who has just been (spoiler alert) kidnapped by mistake. I just loved him and his voice. The Book starts with the night Gillian's father is killed by Baron Alford who is just evil, she is very young and doesn't talk for years until finally she starts talking to her nurse and her Uncle. If you read the Secret this is the son of Iain & Judith Maitland whom they think is dead. Gillian and he are in the process of saving each other. They get away and get to his protector Brodick Buchanan whom we also met in the Secret. We also get to see Ramsey Sinclair. This book has a lot of depth and is long and very worth listening to. Of course there are alot of complications and Gillian finds a friend in Bridgid KirkConnell. Listen and really enjoy.

A narrator can either make or ruin the content of the story and Kirsten Potter's brougue in this book and the McCabe series by Maya Banks are all outstanding due to her narration.Eveline Armstrong and Graeme Montgomery are both strong individuals and wonderful characters who come from warring clans. The King makes them marry to cement a bond so that neither clan will go up against the other. (Spoiler) Eveline has had a fall from her horse where she was out in the elements for 3 days until her brother found her and so became very ill. She finds that if she pretends to be a simpleton she will not have to marry the evil McHugh with whom her father wants to align himself. This monster person acts one way in front of her parents and another to her. As she gets out of the marriage to one man now she is to marry Graeme Montgomery.......Kirsten Potter's voice makes this book and the other highlander series wonderfly enjoyable. The characters are all very distinct and understandable. No baby voices or shrill womens voices. Purchase all the books. You won't be sorry and see what happens to the Armstongs and the Montgomerys as well as the McCabes brothers. Good listening!

This was a good book but when you have a female reader with a SWEET.....SWEET girl voice read it you just ruin the book. Chance was an undercover agent not so sweet person. Reader is ruining the book. Why couldn't you have gotten Dennis Boutsikaris who read all the rest and was wonderful. This reader has just ruined the book. Good God she reads so sweetly. WOW she stated. YUCK.

Here we meet Con Somerford One of the three Georges. This is not a sequel to the The Devil’s Heiress but it is a prequel. If you like Jo Beverly’s a Company of Rogues this is a recommended listening. I read the book and then purchased the audiobook it is so much better that just reading, more emotion and more understanding of Con and Susan’s heartache. You find out about Con’s Dragon tatoo and the other Georges. I loved it because I loved all the characters. And Simon Prebble has won many awards including the golden voice so the. Narration is great. I disagree with the reviewer above about the narrator.You don’t know what will happen until the end and I will not spoil if for you but it is really excellent.

Anne Burnett is forced to marry by proxy some obscure Scottish lunatic, Mad Earl Tiebauld, Aidan Black, whose sister arranged the marriage. Anne travels to her new home only to receive a very unfriendly welcome by her spouse, who not only rejects her, but he wants her back in London. He does some terrible things to get her to leave like making her muck out the stables, feeding a group of people with no way to feed them, cleaning the castle that hasn't been touched for years, You get the idea. However, the English transplant ignores the irritable Scot and soon her actions gain the respect and support of his clan. To her chagrin, Anne also captures Aidan's black heart just as she now loves him too. THE MARRIAGE CONTRACT is an amusing well written Regency romance starring two charming and not so mad (except in love) lead characters. When the story line stays with the main plot the battle of the sexes, it is an absolute delight that will provide fans with a powerfully pleasurable read. There is a political subplot,cleverly inserted and tied back to the prime theme, in which Adain is conflicted on whether to join the Scottish uprising or fighting for rights of his people through the law. Please Remember this is a regency romance not to 30 disk Diana Gabaldon book. This is just a fun light historical, read by Cathy Maxwell.
